Went to a site that I have hit hard last summer. It was a lot that had a house on it from prior to 1874 up through about 3 years ago. I pulled a 26 token cache, a few silver coins, about a half dozen wheats and over $10 in clad. The house burnt down and the school had bought the property. Last week they dug to install a new gas line from the main line to the new construction. When I went there yesterday they filled in the trench and deep holes. The terrain was rather rough, but I managed to dig 3 coins in an hour. 3 Wheats 1917,27, & 29. This gave me the notion that other old coins may have been disturbed and closer to the surface. I told my wife tonight that I was going to find silver as I left the house. They finished dozing the site level today. I dirt fished for about an hour. 1st coin a clad dime The 2nd coin, I knew was old. I could see a milky green color in the soil. Low and behold my 1st large cent (1881 I believe). The last coin was a copper penny. 3 coins and I consider it a great hunt.

Not an 1881 but 1831 Coronet head. Congrads on a first, cool coin.

Thanks Villadenut. Well I guess it's my oldest find so far. Man I'm stoked!!!!

give her a bath in hot peroxide, then a gentle scrub with baking soda. NO LEMON JUICE please or you will kill her!!

Nice old copper. I never get tired of seeing them.

Way to go Loco! That is very cool and nice to know they are still being found here in Ohio. Saturday should be a great day weather wise for you to get out and find some more goodies.

Congrats on your first LC.

Very well done LD! looks to have some good detail on it too. I have one, but it is barely recognizable... I believe they call it toasted! Congrats and GL.

Just has that look that makes it look like it will clean up nice !!!

(Other than one old crusty one, they continue to remain "unfound" for me.) I love seeing others pulling them out though !!!

Congrats on your first "LC" :occasion14:

Bam, down goes another from the list..Great Dig!

Read Don in SJ's post about cleaning coppers in the Cleaning and Preservation section before you do anything to the coin--and that includes water. Water is a cleaning method.

Congrats!
