Another Trade Axe!! Added an "After" Picture.

...and this one's a monster! I found my first three trade axes' last season but this is the best of the bunch...biggest too.

I scouted a site with a foundation still showing so I knocked on the door and got permission no problem. I asked him about the foundation and he told me it was the original house and had burned down in the 1840s. He told me that the land had been in his family since the 1740s...but he also told me that it has been hunted before...lots! I don't usually let this deter me, some of my best finds came from hunted out sites.

After about 30 minutes it was pretty obvious that it had been hunted pretty good. I did find the two buttons so I knew the other guys didn't find it all. I was digging all of the big iron signals as well as this was pretty close to Cannonball Beach and sure enough, out popped the trade axe! I won't be able to get to cleaning until next week and I'm hoping for a touch mark. Thanks for looking.

Just got through an over night lye and zinc bath...will need to dry it out now and add a layer of cover to preserve it fully...no touch marks.

Re: Another Trade Axe!!

It is always nice to find relics like you have, this is what makes this hobby great. My Mine Lab goes deep on iron targets, I use my older Garrett to find items like yours. I really enjoy finds like the one you have. Nice find. HH.

Re: Another Trade Axe!!

Trade axes (like many things) fall into the category of stuff I know nothing about.

Your iron collection is growing pretty fast.

I'm crunching the numbers...I'll PM you with a couple dates...

Re: Another Trade Axe!!

That is a very nice example of an 18th century axe and it looks like it will clean up nice. I wouldn't call it a "trade" axe though unless I found it on an indian site. Settlers and the military used the same style axes and hatchets as were traded to the indians with exception perhaps of the pipe tomahawk.

Thanks Steve. I think that the term "trade axe" has become a name that encompasses all axes of this age and style. This one may actually be a genuine trade axe due to the area it was found...
