Anti-Bullying Bill Could Jail People Who Criticize Politicians

New law would impose vast restrictions on freedom of speech

School’s out for summer and Nanny of the Month is taking the opportunity to salute the zealots within the otherwise laudable anti-bullying movement.

They take a real problem–few things are more loathsome than picking on the vulnerable–and bungle the response, as has been done with most every “get tough!” effort from D.A.R.E., the failed anti-drug program, to all the idiotic iterations of the “zero tolerance” fad.

Do we really need to ban trash talking at high school sporting events? Do we really need attorney general investigations of foul-mouthed jocks? And for the love of whatever remnants of common sense remain in our schoolhouses and statehouses, do we really need to fight bullying with jail cells?

Not only did this month’s top nanny introduce a bill that would criminalize speech deemed to be bullying–up to a year in the clink!–she introduced a bill that, according to UCLA First Amendment scholar Eugene Volokh, is not limited to speech about children (despite it being touted with the typical “for the children!” justifications).

Volokh notes that the bill, if passed, could punish harsh speech directed at journalists, academics, celebrities, politicians, and the like, if the speech results in “substantial emotional distress.”

Well at least I will know every one that I'm sharing my cell with.

How if you have a working mind, could you even conceive such an antiquated law as making it illegal to criticize politicians, they work for us! They should expect emotional stress, and if they think that they are being bullied, then they should resign and find another line of work. We are formulating a nation of thin-skinned citizens who can't cope with other views, and need to grow up, and get over it.

Oh boy, more laws to break or ignore...

:dontknow:

Judge, your Sentencing me is causing me “substantial emotional distress.”

Judge, the district attornies questions are causing me “substantial emotional distress.”

Judge, I was at the Protest and that cop there started yelling & caused me “substantial emotional distress.”

Judge, I was watching C-Span & what I heard caused me “substantial emotional distress.”

Just my way of Trying to get a Laugh while being sarcastic.

if your asking my as a Joke, Absolutely !
where do I file charges of being Bullied ?

"A shot in the dark" is usually an ill advised proposition - no matter what Joe says. I probably could have been clearer.

Yeah, I was trying to be funny, and that was the vein I took your comment to be in.

Don't see you as politically assertive (as in pushing your beliefs) but I do see humor in what you said and did take it that way. On the other hand, don't be surprised if someone tries to use that thought in court in the future ... and gets away with it.

I dont think they count, remember you have to be a corrupt politician to be above the law.

Ole Bummer bad mouths almost everyone who doesn't go along with his agenda, is this applicable to him? Can we send him to Gtimo? Can we please?

Maybe if they started doing their jobs the correct way they wouldn't have to worry about getting their feelings hurt by bad words
