Maybe a piece off of a cabinet door or off a piece of furniture. That's all I got. ;D

Given it's size, any chance it could be part of the clampy thing on the end of suspenders? (missing it's spring?)

With the hole on the one end, I figger something else might attach to it - like a suspender.

Originally it made me think of the suspender like things that kids used to have strung through their coatsleeves to attach their mittens to.

Michelle-

Agree with the date. Seems to me a friend found the same type of object at an old homestead dating back to the mid 1800's. We had no idea what it was either.

Michelle,
I am not sure what these are but they have come from several different Union campsites around Marietta Georgia. Are always found with Yankee stuff.

Hi Earl1 long time no hear....Thank You for this info awesome...and now what I believe is that this piece could be some kind of brass ornament from a box or personal piece of furniture that was part of a soldiers gear...the rivets kind of give me that thought. Thanks again. Hey any news on the ring?

OK... I'm revising my guess. :)

I think it could be half of a hinge from a small box (cigars, maybe?)

Look at an altoids tin's hinge it would be kinda sorta like that.

:)

Hey, no fair! I was agreeing with your first guess! Now I'll have to agree with your new one! LOL.

It could be from a small box (or fancy book binding with a clasp, maybe). It's a hinge or hinged clasp of some kind.

Too funny, lord....

I've got some old wooden cigar boxes around here somewhere - and yeah... that darn thing looks like it could be a hinge from one of them.

It's nice to see I've got a friend who's willing to vascillate with me. :)

Michelle,
This is the portion of a lock that the latch goes into. Was commonly used in writing kits and portable file holders. I got the photos from Dr Francis Lords "Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia".He was the finest expert on Civil War artifacts that I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Sadly he passed away earlier this year . He was ninty plus years old.
Later,
Earl1

Don't ever listen to me, I am now .06% correct on these guesses! :D Monty
I do listen to all of your 0.06% .....anyway we got it now.....will dig for food...this piece is too weak to be used for a support of that type...it isnt flemsy but it is kind of thin and frail...worked well for a latch...
