Detector(s) used
Nokta FoRs Gold, a Gold Cube, 2 Keene Sluices and Lord only knows how many pans....not to mention a load of other gear my wife still doesn't know about!
Primary Interest:
Prospecting
Recently bought a Nokta FORS Gold, and although it's primary
mission is finding gold from the smallest of nuggets on up, it's
also got the same coin shooting circuitry as the FORS Core, sans
only the beach mode.

Due to disease and surgery, I am completely deaf (-0- function)
in my right ear, and the left ear is now dealing with the same
disease. I can get by, but there not much hearing left in my
remaining, functioning ear.

I chose the Nokta FORS unit mostly due to it's unique vibration
feature built into the grip, but also because it is one of the top
VLF detectors out there. I've gotten amazing depth on coins,
and in fact I think it's a deeper hunter than my old Fisher CZ-6a.

Been considering a small modification to the FORS Gold to enhance
it's overall usability for us deaf folks, but would like to hear from
other hearing impaired users first, just to make sure it will provide
the needed benefit for others besides myself.

Have no idea if it would be helpful but treasure producrs, maker of the vibra-probe pinpointer sells the Vibra-Phone 280. Plugs into 1/4" headphone jack and translates the tone you would hear to vibration. It clips to md shaft so you can feel the vibration. Probably no help for multi tone, but would tell when to look at vdi if you have it. It has been around for a while but I have never read of anyone using it.

I checked out the Vibra-phone 280 and I like it.
I think this (or a home made version of it) will work well on my Ol Whites 6000 .
The vibration will alert me of a target I then look at the meter for target ID - pinpointing etc.
I think I could go without phones this way...

You know (enter dream sequence)....If I could make my own MD,
the screen would have an outline of my coil as the main image.
When you hit a target as you swing, a colored "blip" will zip by your coil outline.
And every type of metal would have it's own color...color filter for ultimate discrimination!!
How cool would it be to see on your screen, two different colors as your coil goes over
multiple objects of dissimilar metals!?!?!
And their respective location under your coil as you hold it over them. And size!
Almost like a ground x-ray vision....

ooooh tie this in with a Phone app.
No meter or screen on the MD rod. Coil is wi-fi or blue tooth to your phone or tablet.
Swing rod has the coil and handle with shaft area under arm for the batteries.
Handle will have the vibration alert.
once alerted, look at your phone for details.

Ok - time for night-night..

My father left his metal detector outside in the rain. Was a Bounty Hunter Prospector. Being an electronics geek I took it apart and tried to fix it. It came back to life, but the sound was done. Board wouldn't put any out. I wired two LEDs into the Target indicator. They flash brighter and more frequently the closer they are to a metal object. Ended up being a great night hunter and I imagine would be a great mod for someone with hearing impairment.

Sounds like a good modification!

I actually went as far as having an EE friend of mine design the circuit for
a Nokta Fors Gold, and then I sent all the info off to Nokta. Never even got
a reply...not so much as a "Thanks for the idea"...not response at all.

I'm actually in the market for a coinshooter, and since the Fors Gold hasn't more
than about 4 hrs. on it, I'll be selling it to buy a coin/jewelry machine.

Hearing has improved some, and I can now tell the difference in response tones,
but I still want a digital or analog readout of the target ID.
