Can't help on Virginia but ...
...just south of Vernal on hwy 45, the Horseshoe Bend area of the Green River has been reported to have gold in bench deposits above the river and on the inside bend of the horseshoe itself (in gravel/cobble bars). Both deposits are on the inside of the horseshoe so quite a bit of 4wheeling or hiking is likely...have fun!
Other spots along the Green River where you see larger cobble stones in the gravel/sand would also be good places to check. Also look for RUBIES in your pan as they have been found regularly along with the gold so keep your eyes open for those red stones that can be worth more than the gold!
Back in the day someone tried to run a gold dredge in the Green near the site of the bridge in Jensen...it failed because the gold was too small for the dredge to catch but it should be good for you!

Well sort of...in a couple states (Hawaii comes to mind) the only gold is the lost jewelry :-)
