"Hep" used to be an older slang term for "Hip" so it could refer to that.

"aware, up-to-date," first recorded 1908 in "Saturday Evening Post," but said to be underworld slang, of unknown origin. Variously said to have been the name of "a fabulous detective who operated in Cincinnati" or a saloonkeeper in Chicago who "never quite understood what was going on ... (but) thought he did." Taken up by jazz musicians by 1915; hepcat "addict of swing music" is from 1938.

Very interesting, thanks. The site I found it in was a Civil War skirmish site. However, according to my research the most promising place is covered with thick brush so I'm gonna have to wait till fall to get in there. Where I found the tag it's flooded I don't know how many times. That would explain the depth of this tag and it could've come from anywhere.

I agree with the slang, but what did they use it for i wonder?

They used it to remind those that were hep for love, that they , too, needed hep vaccine.
