Could the six holes on the top be for spokes? Maybe a umbrella part where the arms attach?

Thats what I thought too.
 

i am about 90% sure this is a piston out of a brake master cylinder. most likely early 1940s. it is the right size and all the old master cylinder pistons have the small holes on one end and the groove on the other end would have held a rubber washer that created the seal. the hole in the end is where the rod from the brake pedal goes to push the piston. i am still trying find a picture to confirm it but i am pretty sure that is what you have
 

I also think it's a master cylinder piston. Being brass, it's probably older.

My guess is that it is the "horn" of the saddle (assuming the horn is the part you hold on to?).

Basing that on the holes in the top look like they would be for stitching?
 

Hi!! There is some numbers or writing on one side of your artifact....can you read what it says ?? From the Pic...I cannot make it out??.....Thanks Joe
