Hi all, Was hoping i could perhaps get some answers on here, I found this at the beach yesterday. The claws of the buckle looks very much alike to a victorion buckle but i am not sure.

Can anyone perhaps help. The markings on the buckle is weird as i tried looking up the name on the net but i cant find anything related to the name "MAKL"

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum!

It looks like there is another letter in front of the M; it appears to be an O or either an S lying on its side. There also looks to be another letter behind the L. Can you clean it some more and take another pic?

Interesting find :)

Hi Breezie

Thanks for the Reply its actually a infinity sign infront of the letters MAKL and then another infinity sign. Let me see if i can take another photo from the top to display the infinity signs better.

Sorry for the wonky drawings lol - Just my idea of showing you guys what im seeing and what the camera isint showing up so nicely. I just did the biggest no no....I dropped the buckle and the one claw came loose finding that the M has broken off :BangHead: I guess if it was worth something its probably not worth something now!!

I have searched everywhere from shoe buckles, hair clips, belt buckles, handbag buckles i cannot find anything with this lettering "MAKL" or infitiny signs. Google came up empty handed

The closest that i could match something is this victorian buckle = this one has diamonds in where mine dont have but if i look at the claws they look very similar in shape and same pointy figure if i can call it that?

If its a small buckle , about 1.25" Then its likely a pants waist adjuster buckle.

What size is it? How did the M break off? Are the letters raised? Welded on or what?

I don't know if you realize this or not, but Makl is a surname. I went to whitepages.com and typed in Makl and found quite a few. I'm wondering if the origin of Makl is French? I'm thinking your buckle may be French too.

Broken Buckle.webpM Piece.webpUnassembled.webpAssembled.webp

Hi All, Firstly thank you for all your comments and help i appreciate the feedback, I am thus still searching but still scratching my head on these. Attached is some photos which maybe could answer more questions. The buckle is tiny 3.4cm(H) x 2.3cm(W)
The writing is indented into the middle piece i also cant really tell what the material is in the middle as its very brittle. When the buckle fell the one claw came off and when it came off it took the M with it. If you look at the photos where its assembled you can see the fine hairline crack, On the other unassembled photo you can actually see the chunk with the letter M that came off that held the claw in its place.

I dont know if there is more info on the buckle under the rust, im actually to scared to clean it up as its so brittle might not be a good idea if more pieces break. Unless its already worth nothing with it being broken then i might aswell try clean it up and see what lays beyond the rust.

Thanking you for your help, oh and also saw this as you said MAKL is quite a surname in the states. Makl.webp

I just found this and seems to have infinity signs on it but infact its actually S's on their sides for "SOLIDE" buckles see website
Suspender Buckle - Stamped "SOLIDE" - Christie's Metal Detecting

my problem is if you type solide into google it comes up with buckles history etc and my buckle by MAKL comes up with nothing hahahah they looook verry similar sooo confusing

I see someone has found a buckle by solide - and also look very similar

Those are not S on the buckle they are just a fancy scroll marks.

Whooops my bad, :dontknow: I took them to be S's as the name of the buckle was SOLIDE.:icon_thumright: Thanks for your help, perhaps what i think is infinity marks on the buckle is actually also just fancy scrolls :dontknow:

The Mystery still unsolved:dontknow:

I really do not know what to do....Would it be clever to try soak this in some vinegar and salt to try get rid of the rust to see if there is other markings or would this be very dumb since the buckle is still unknown and could be a once of a lifetime find?

I didn't realize you were from South Africa until now. That being the case, with the 5 out of 6 languages spoken there that are not English, the MAKL could translate into ? or MAKL could still be the sir name of the maker.

Good luck on finding out what it means :)

HI all

Thanks again for the responses - I managed to get help from some people in South Africa and they said it seem to be a a officers suspenders buckle which they refer back to the ones that have the paris writing on. Although it has not been confirmed.

As for the MAKL - MAKE writing i am posting this photo again lol i thought exactly the same the first tame it has to be make and not makl but there seem to be no extra markings or missing markings from the letter L

Look closely to this photo, The buckles identity looks very close the make buckle but....It is not all the same colour as the MAKE buckle. The make buckle almost seems to be all metal one colour where this has more of reddish colour in the middle where writing is on and the outer more of a yellow colour.

I appreciate the help and not saying it isint a Make buckle im just still scratching my head putting the puzzle together and still seems that we not there yet?:dontknow:

Please click on the photos to see them as high res and have a look at the lettering.

Buckle.webp

Even when you look at the pic below you can actually see the imprint the indentations how the letters are formed and on the L there is no indentation of the stripes of an E its definately a L

Enlarge this pic and you can see the top of the E.
One way to find out, clean the top and see if it reads "British".

I have done some photo shopping on these, Cutting them out, I have left top one as is, then middle done a contrast correction and bottom a black and white to get embevelling.

L3.webp

and then last but not least i tried to take that make buckle pic and see how close it is to my buckle. I know the angles will differ a bit but not by far. From what i can see on my buckle if i zoom really close the letters might have faded a bit but it almost looks very hand painted or shall i say not stamped into the metal as per make buckles. You can see that was hammerd in where this buckle of mine has slight indentations but the letters are painted. The letters on my buckle is allot fatter and wider than the make buckle and also the K doesnt look like the two legs join up to 90degree angle it looks more like it comes out the other leg running up i have tried to explain most of my findings on the photos. Im no expert im just elaborating on what im seeing on my side, your comments are more than welcome.

I still think its the British make buckle but I may be wrong.
I would say clean a small bit and see , one letter would tell.
but im guessing the terrible thing is, you destroyed it?

cough cough......something to that effect.:BangHead:

The guys this side told me since it was already broken i might aswell take a chance leaving it in vinegar and salt to see if one can loosen up the rust and prevail what is written under the rust.

I did so but left it a tad too long. as i picked it up to rinse i gently rubbed over the rust and it literally disintegrated :dontknow: I every corner failed and i have basically short pieces left in all sizes. i think the rust kept it all together and from removing it it just collapsed. I basically have zero to work on now except these photos. Was worth a shot and have to thank all that has been scratching brains with me. Im going out again to same spot tomorrow to see what else we can find as i believe we have found a certain walk way to a treasure......Lets hope i find another im verrrrry dissapointed in this find as i will now never know what it actually was.

Thanks again, i think i will still leave this unsolved for now , i have left the pieces in normal water to see over time if the rest will fall off perhaps and as you said perhaps i can just get one letter to confirm.
