Any ones help perhaps on this buckle i found at the beach?

Hi all, Was hoping i could perhaps get some answers on here, I found this at the beach yesterday. The claws of the buckle looks very much alike to a victorion buckle but i am not sure.

Can anyone perhaps help. The markings on the buckle is weird as i tried looking up the name on the net but i cant find anything related to the name "MAKL"

I still think its the British make buckle but I may be wrong.
I would say clean a small bit and see , one letter would tell.
but im guessing the terrible thing is, you destroyed it?

Thanks so much to you two for scratching your brains with me, A dear lesson learned with trying to de-rust a object. I will definately not make the same mistake again. If i stayed closer i would have bought each of you a big chocolate for all your help.
