Good idea, thank you for the suggestion!
Here where I live, we have mines and I assume there should be a shaft near them? I am always so tempted to check it out but I don’t know enough to go alone. They are old copper and gold mines. I did find a pretty rock outside one of them.

I learned that the hard way. I was so excited when I found this site online. I don’t know anyone who shares my interest in finding old things. I’m hoping I’ll find someone nearby here.

I was just in Glenville, NC. I had my equinox with me just in case. I found a recreational are in a lake and decided to check out the area. I was surprised with a small 14k ring.

Just go somewhere, you never know....

I will. I am super excited. I’ll be getting on my plane at 7 am tomorrow morning!

Welcome to TNet!

If you are in NC now... gold rush started with a door stop turned out to be a nugget. Gold coins were minted in the SE can be quite valuable. Emeralds were discovered in NC, should still be able to get unsearched buckets to check. I'm thinking rubies were also found in a stream, close to where gold rush started. Boy once found a giant sapphire in a bucket from one of the area mines. I think Cherokee is a name of a town in NC and there are Indian artifacts.

Balsam Mountain Nature Trail is a 1.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Cherokee, North Carolina that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, camping, and nature trips and is best used from March until November.

I’m in the balsam mountain. I look outside the cabin and I’m just not sure. I’m from Southern California, la county … so this kind of cold is quite unfamiliar. Lol I don’t have any kind of metal detecting tools anymore. My metal detector and tools were stolen when my car was broken into at the ruins of an old dam on Mother’s Day last year. I kind of gave up everything after that… but I couldn’t pass up finding gems. That’s how I ended up here. Glad I came.

Sent a PM. Since you're already there, quickest way to find places to pan streams... try making a post in TNet prospecting forums. I do have an older GPAA mining guide, shows on map borders of gold placers, with article on where to pan. By the time I could find it, read it, somebody on the forum here would have it answered.

I forgot the name of the place I got these from but I will check out your suggestion tomorrow morning. It’s going to snow in the late afternoon, so I best get up early! Having a great time! Im loving the civil war antique stores too!
Looks like you are already finding some nice gemstones.

  • Panning in federally owned land in North Carolina is allowed as long as the purpose is recreational and you only take back small amounts of gold. Prospecting is also allowed on public land as long as extractions are minimal and historic sites are not disturbed. Suction dredging and sluicing are not permitted on public land.
