I've been trying to get some half and dollar rolls for a couple weeks now.I've been to 2 different banks at which I have an account with. Two banks, but about 9 different branches.I swear these tellers look at me like i'm crazy.I've managed to get about 7 single Sac. dollars of which wasn't the kind of dollars I was looking for.I've asked if I could order them at 3 diff. branches, the tellers smile and say NO! I'm ready to close my accounts and open up at the first bank that gives me some rolls, that's how bad it is. So,anybody out there have any hints as to acqiure these rolls or should I just give it up? Btw-I gotta '64 silver quarter in my pocket change yesterday, heard it before I saw it.Got it at the same Hess station that I got the 1903 indianhead cent at.I immediately asked for a couple dollars in quarters, with no more luck.

To me, that's just bad service on thier part. As a customer, you should be able to request any form of money that you want. Maybe you should call the 1-800 customer service number and give them an ear full. You may want to think about switching banks. I only have an account at one bank, but go to all different banks, and have never walked away empty handed when looking for halves. Usually they ask me how many I want.

The IKE dollars are VERY difficult to find here. I only found one roll this week by accident,as I asked to purchase halve dollars and the teller gave me the roll of IKE'S and 2 rolls of halves.

Diggum, if you are tired of driving to each bank and not finding any halves I really do suggest opening up the telephone book at looking at the banks with the most locations. Or any banks that are not that far from your home. The tellers will find out if they have halves and most likely will tell you how many rolls they have. I wrote it down(bank address, and quantity of rolls) and drove to them quickly and snagged all of the rolls. I started calling the banks as soon as they open, and I suggest calling earlier in the week. Heck any day to call is a good day, I just had really good luck on a Monday. I was thinking that people might roll their change, or just plan on doing their banking the first day of the week after the weekend.

I have taken all the halves from 8 of the banks around where I live and around where I work. The tellers are getting used to me coming in and asking and have actually been really nice about it. Some even told me to keep checking back because sometimes people cash them in.

I haven't tried to order any yet - but I feel that will have to be my next step.

Also, I don't turn in the non-keepers to another bank because I really don't want to get them back again. I spend them. It is funny to see the looks on peoples faces when you pay for stuff with them. And, I would bet that most (if not all of them) end up going home with someone and not back to a bank or into circulation - so I should never be bothered looking at them again!!

Down here in the good ole banana republic of S. Florida, unless you have an account at the particular bank you are in they won't even deal with you.Unless of course you are trying to cash a check, then they will gladly charge you 5.00 to do so.I get checks from various business clients and I took a check in a bank that I don't have an account with on the pretense of getting some rolls with it.Ha-ha,no rolls,so I left with my check in hand.I have continued(patiently) to stop in various locations in the tri-county area( dade, broward and palm beach ) while i'm out and about during the day.I have yet to get a single roll of dollars(sac.-susan b.-or eisenhower) nor a single roll of halves. Not even a single half for that matter. The only thing i've been able to get is a few (very few) sac. dollars. So all you guys that still live in America, good luck to you all with your searching.I guess i'll have to look for nickels and pennies. :( -diggummup

Well guess what happended to me on Tuesday when I turned my rolled halves back into my bank account. I stood in line waiting for a teller to call me to the window, 2-3 tellers not busy but don't want to call me due to me holding a box of coins. A teller calls me up and I have very good hearing, but I guess she didn't think so. Under her breath I heard her say "shit", as she obviously didn't want to take the coins. So I was already upset by this but I didn't say anything or act any differently, and I kept my cool.

The teller carried on some small talk, then went into the back to get the metal trays to put the halves in. She must have spoken to the bank manager as the manager came over to the window. The manager was VERY, VERY nasty. She said to me, "Where are you getting these rolls, from different banks? Yes, I am, I replied. Well, take them back to the banks you got them from because we don't want them! We have to sell them back to Brinks and they charge us a fee! I asked how much of a fee, as I thought if it was a small amount maybe I could pay it. She dismissed my question altogether. Then she said, I don't want to see any more rolls, do you understand me!. Yes, I understand you."

Needless to say I was not happy being treated like a damn criminal in front of the entire bank. Now I count each and every roll twice before I turn them in, to make sure they are accurate. The next day I got a slip in the mail from this bank saying that my rolled coin was .50 cents short. I know for a FACT that this is NOT the case. So this was done intentionally just to piss me off.

So I looked in the telephone book and found a number for customer service and I got the name of the regional manager. I called and spoke with her this morning and infromed her of the situation. I also told her that I do on a regular basis bring in coins and deposit them into my account. I told the regional manager as well as the teller, that I do search coins as I do collect them. I wasn't dishonest about what I was doing. I also informed the reg. mgr that I asked to purchase coins at my bank and they told me we don't carry coins, only what we receive from our customers. So I said you can't even supply me with what I need, so I take my TIME and my GAS money to go to different banks to find rolls of coins to look at, and the bank manager tells me to take the rolls back to these banks. I said so I can spend more time and gas! I also told her that the bank doesn't even have halve wrappers. I told her how much money I had in 3 of my accounts with this bank, and I said maybe that isn't much money to you, but I'm thinking about closing my accounts due to such treatment.

I've had the accounts since I was a child, and so has my mother and grandmother. I also informed her that the bank is a financial institution and that coins are LEGAL TENDER and I think what the manager told me is illegal that they will not accept the coins as a deposit. I then infromed her that as a bank, that they decided how they would handle coins and they are the ones that have a business agreement with Brinks to sell the coins and pay a fee. That's to bad, if they don't like it then they shouldn't have it set up that way. I also informed her that the bank is making money every day with my money sitting in their bank and that there should be something positive to having an account with them. She is going to look into the situation, talk with the bank manager and get back to me on Friday to see what they can do.

I've decided that if they won't take my coins then I will close all my accounts with this bank and open 3-4 different accounts with other banks. Banks that many locations close to me to have several drop off for the rolled coins. A bank is a business, tellers shouldn't be lazy and should respect that they have a job and customers should be treated FAIRLY!

I had a similar situation happen here in Vegas. I am member of a credit union here, and drop about $50 in coin at one branch for cash. They have a counter and have not given me any problems at all with cashing these out. The problem I have had is with buying the coin! I buy from the large main branch and the manager actually told me last week that she would no longer sell me rolled coin! I was only buying 25 in pennies and 16 in nickels! She stated that she is not a merchant bank and won't do it for me. She stated that they pay Loomis a fee to buy the coins! As if that wasn't bad enough, the other tellers chimed in and stated that I should take my business to another bank!! As you can imagine I was shocked. I work in customer service, and this was a major no-no. The manager over all the branches has yet to call me back yet, but I can't wait to lay into them about this one! Banks here require you to have an account to even sell you the coin, so my choices are becoming a little more limited. I am about to stick with casinos only, but even that is getting tough. Everyone here is slowly moving towards coinless machines! That rattle in the coin tray that has always been a trade mark of Vegas is dying a slow death.

Up shot is that when I do get coin here, my finds are not bad. Out of that 25 in pennies I got about 30 wheaties.

Good luck to us all with these snotty tellers and lack of service.

Go to the main branch of the bigger banks in your area. Credit unions are generally no good for halves and dollars.

You guys going to write a book? :D

Anyway back to the point. It all depends on the bank some have them some don't. I cashed in rolls of haves and pennies and Susan B dollars at a store. The clerk instead of cashing it in with the register money she used her own cash. Pocketing the Susan B's right away and I bet she will search the rolls herself. I would have told her I searched them but I figured she needed more to do. ;D I found no silver just some 1996 haves with somekind of missrike on a whole roll of them. I also found a few wheats.

Keep @ it and HH!!

Mud(s.w.a.t.)-I don't think you understand that I have personally been to over a dozen banks and made phone calls to over 20 more.So as I said before,to those of you who still live in the U.S..good luck with your roll searching. This is S.Florida and America it AINT!!!!!!!!!! And what happened to MANNERS when it comes to people who deal with the public. All I can say is these tellers are lucky they're living in this present time.Cause if this were the wild west,i'd give 'em something to worry about like a dose of pain!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Those are some amazing stories guys. I don't know if I'd keep my cool if faced with such attitudes.

Banks are such money grubbing institutions (witness all their random fees for formerly free services) that I'm not surprised they whine about the Brinks charges. Those were simply costs that banks had to absorb as part of doing business, but now they operate on a ultra-minimal cost structure headed by pinheaded bean counters like you've encountered. And that kind of rancor is absolutely uncalled for.

Bravo for being civil about it. Cancel your account with these avaricious idiots.

Little update on the whole thing from my end. The bank manager in charge of all the branches called me yesterday and apologized for any problems, told me that I would NOT be charged a fee, and could buy as much coin from them as their supplies allow. She also said she would order coin for me and would charge me a cent. She said she didn't care if I was burying it in my back yard, if a member wants ANY form of legal tender, the bank is there to provide it. I was pleasantly surprised! She said she was going to inform all the branches here that members who collect coins are still members, and not a nuisance. This is one time that complaining to the right person may actually change things!

Vegasmtl, I'm glad everything worked out well for you. Thought I would also update as to what happened in my situation. The regional manager called me back today and left a message on my answering machine. She had talked with the bank manager that was extremely rude to me and she said that the manager knew she was wrong and said she would apologize to me. She said that I could take my coins to that bank and it wouldn't be a problem.

Well, I had already been to the bank in the morning before I received the message in the afternoon and I made a withdrawl of all of my money except $1.00 at that bank. I told the teller(this is one of the freindly tellers) that I found another bank that is paying more interest and I opened an account there yesterday. She was actually happy for me in that respect but sorry that I wouldn't be using the bank much. I told her now the nasty tellers don't have to see me very much, I will only be in once in a while to withdraw my money from my one account that gets direct deposit. I just don't feel like changing that one right now. My new bank doesn't have a problem with me depsoiting coins,as I asked the bank manager when I opened the account.

Pennyworth, that was smart of you to ask the new bank manager ahead of time. How annoying would it be to get a whole new account complete with all new grouchy tellers.

I keep thinking about your experience with the old bank. It's really quite a story and simply more proof of my belief that customer service in this country is going down the tubes.
