I think a table lighter... Not a lamp.
It is way more probable.

so this lighter must heat up the thin glass on top of it to work i think.never would of thought it was a lighter.

Yes, that is how it works. I found a different design of this and it gives a good description of how it was used.

The lighter plugs into a standard outlet and provides a red hot light within seconds of lifting it from the holder. As the lighter is raised, the mechanics move slightly and trigger the electricity. When it's sitting on the holder, it's not hot.
My assumption is that he meant "when the lighter was flipped", that is when it was triggered on.
