Here is another picture. I thought it was a jail key but didn't think it was possible. This was found way out in the country in the front yard of an old house.

maybe the yard is where the escapee lived. or a jailer

This key and lock came off the front door of a big house .

it was common for mansions owned by rich people to have a big lock ! (just another possibility)

We used to have keys like that all the time down here, its a house key. It was a rectangular lock about the size of your hand, very common on back doors here pre WW1, the lock could be locked with the key from inside and outside. I spose an early deadlock. The guts was mounted on the back of the door from memory. Its a big chance it is british.

The Back door Still works
using one of those big keys

I agree with house key. The one I found similar and my favorite key find :icon_sunny: There's a round brass metal inlay in the key close to eye.
