That was my initial impression as well. Vaguely resembles a PTO coupler -- possible sliding collar on one end, possible release button channel on the side -- but I don't think it is one. I've never seen one with teeth on the side or a cutout like that.

There's just not enough detail of the object to venture a good guess IMHO,
photos of all sides and more info of if there's holes, threaded or non-threaded, internal cavities, etc., etc.

I didn't keep it . Was very heavy and didn't want to haul it around. 1880 site if that helps

Is it metal? (Looks almost like Stone..)
Might be a wheel cylinder off a steam locomotive.. 😁

I don't really think its a wheel cylinder. Hydraulic brakes are a 20th century invention.
But it does remind me of one..

The teeth on the bottom say it has to do with a leverage tool for cutting like rebar...the handle may be close by. Nice find. dz
