Archeology Site – 3rd Visit

I got to the site at 6:30am this morning, this homestead site was active from roughly 1840 - 75. I’m thinking today will be my last visit here, as the earth-movers are now parked at the entrance way into the field. My first find was an 1844 Upper Canada Half Penny Token, this was followed by a #2 size crotal bell. The finds weren’t the best today, but this is my third visit and the Arkies dug this site for almost four months last summer. I always love the eyeball finds that pop up at these early homestead sites, such as buttons, porcelain and glass fragments. The large cast iron ‘foot’ likely came from a potbellied stove. I think the chrome-plated metal disc is from the taillight of a tractor.

Thank you for your post Cru. The bell was a nice surprise, I thought I'd found all of them on my previous visit.
If only this field hadn't been used for grazing cows, the coin would've been in better nick.

I originally, for whatever reason, thought it was a civil war token. Probably because of the X. Now, that image is stuck in my head, but can't remember the details.

The bell I found has a "3". It looks smaller than yours. Is "1" the largest, other numbers smaller? Gary

I hear you about not being able to remember things like we used to WP.
Funny, my long term memory is pretty good, yet I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday!

Until the 1870s, here in Canada we used British, US and even Spanish coins.
We started making our 'own coinage' in the early 1870s.

Now that you mention it Todd, my bell my very well be a #3 or possibly a #4.
I'll do a size comparison and get back to you, maybe post a pic here of the one you found and we'll compare them.

I apologize for the delay in getting back to everyone who responded to this thread, I've been working in Ottawa, ON since Monday.
On Thursday night, I watched the Ottawa 67's kick the crap out of the Guelph Storm in the OHL Playoffs!

It's a big field and the finds were spread over a fairly small area (maybe half an acre).
I'm thinking this site had a pretty short life span, possibly only 25 years.

Unfortunately I don't offer my assistance to these folks anymore.
A number of years ago I approached an archeologist on a site in my area.
When I told him that I did metal detecting and volunteered my help, he proceeded to call me "A thief of history" and asked me to leave the site.

Now I prefer to just follow behind them an 'Hoover' up what they miss.
