are you a ring finder member

Mike-4H is correct in saying in our area most folks don't charge to hunt for lost items. I do know of two who accepted rewards after they first refused, when the item was found and the happy owner really, really pushed. One hunter donated the reward to the local club. The other, well it was a very expensive ring, the reward amount was posted, and although I have never accepted a reward, I do not think worse of him. He has donated his time freely many, many times in the past. When the owner pushes a reward on me, I suggest a local church or other charity. As with most serious metal-detectorists, if available, I will gladly help others for the experience of new places, and meeting other hunters. We need all the positive publicity we can get. In my small town, one park has NO Detecting posted up there with alcohol and firearms. Years ago, before the sign was posted, I tried to discuss the topic with the town manager. In his case, it was a half-witted discussion. Anyway, I, always clarify up front that I charge no fees or rewards. I also clarify, if hunting on private property, who keeps other items found.

I'm a Ring Finder. I joined the directory a couple of months ago.

To date, I've been contacted about 6 times through the directory. Four of those we couldn't help, mostly because they couldn't say where they lost their jewelry. Searching 10 city blocks is not an option.

A couple of weekends ago, my 12 year old daughter and I did two recoveries. We found a platinum wedding ring lost in a yard, and a Sweet Sixteen watch lost on the beach. The ring owner's reward covered our gas and lunch, plus the 20% to the Breast Cancer charity. No reward from the college girls for the watch.

But my daughter is still glowing with pride from the experience. We both worked hard to be successful on the two recoveries. I hunted with a DFX and Bigfoot, but wouldn't you know it, she found both items with her humble Coinmaster (two years experience hunting with Dad didn't hurt!)

Watch a few of the videos on the RingFinders site, check out the smiles, see how everybody goes away happy. Chris Turner has created a classy service that we're proud and happy to be part of.

Hope you don't mind my own little story of finding a ring. I was not "hired" to do this but happened upon it and decided to do a good deed.

This was Mothers day in about 1997. I had been out metal detecting on some recent construction in Manassas city, not too much luck, a few three ring bullets
and some small brass to show for two hours of swinging my white's 6900. I was going by the back roads of Prince William county to my Warrenton home when I passed an old farm house with several people, a few kids, included frantically searching the grass in the front yard.

I knew what had happened before I stopped my old truck, I dusted off my old fatigue jacket and ambled over and asked what I already knew.

"What did you lose?" I said to a small group of distraught faces, expecting either keys or a ring.

It seems that a loving husband and children had given a their Mom/wife a
nice ring on her special day and now she had the bad fortune to have it slip from her finger.

"I have a metal detector in my truck, I'll find it if you can point out where you have been." I said.

I set to work, sweeping the huge yard with its rather high grass in overlapping patterns, one hour and nothing, I was getting a little tired but no way was I going to give up, I was going to find that nice Ladies ring even if my arm fell off.

Just as I was about to surrender to my aching arm, I decided to go a little outside the perimeter of where the target area was and BANG, there it was in the grass.

The looks on their faces when I poured the mothers day gift into her hands was priceless. I refused all offers of money and reward, some things have their own reward BUT, I did ask if I could come back some time and hunt the adjacent field
and maybe the side yards where I'd head a lot of great DEEP signals.

It was the right move, plenty of civil war artifacts came from that field and a few nice coins closer to the 120 Year Old farm house.

I like to think it was one of my better finds even though I didn;t get to keep it.
