artifact auction "update"

http://www.asde.net/~gosleauc/martin.htm

This is a link to an upcoming auction, some pretty nice pics, it says there are re-pros and authentic. Thought some of you might be interested. HH Charlie

Update:

Well I didn't stay very long...LOL. It started off ridiculous and went downhill from there. All I can say is I wish I had a bunch of re-pros to sell. I was expecting things to at least go reasonable but there were either a bunch of idiots there or a couple of guys to run up bids. The worst part was everything was mixed together and nothing was marked re-pro or authentic. I didn't spend a dime but got some pretty good free entertainment out of it. Oh well as soon as all this blasted snow melts I will go out and find some of my own.

Re: artifact auction

Looks like a lot of nice things are going on the block. I just wish that it was closer to me. Thanks for posting.

Re: artifact auction

Good LAWD that's a buttload of modern reproductions...

Re: artifact auction

Holy cow, I agree with Matt- looks to be mostly if not all fake. Might even be some "Grey Ghost" work in there -

I am gonna go to this auction, did you see anything in the pictures that would be a good authentic item? I am hoping that there are some with COA's but I didn't see anything about it mentioned in the sale bill.

Re: artifact auction

Coa's really don't mean anything other than someone thought they could be real and put in on a piece of paper. That doesn't make their opinion correct, knowledgable or legit in any way at all. I swear, every tom, dick & harry in the free world is now an authenticator..lol. Why heck, all you need is an Overstreet guide and a microscope to be an instant expert!

Unfortunately, I have been to alot of auctions and estate sales that are just like that one right there....full of fakes. The vast majority (if not all) of those points that they have there are reproductions. You're going to be taking a chance buying anything from those lots without having a good working knowledge of reproductions vs. authentic, and the odds are greatly against you. Who knows though, you could get lucky (did you get a lotto ticket tonight?). The wooden arrowhead shaped frame of points may be good, but judging from the rest of it..I wouldn't bet any money on that.

If you're feeling lucky, then I'd highly recommend getting someone to go with you that is familiar with what to look for. Also, look for a guarantee (but I highly doubt they will give one).

I went to an auction last week that advertised over 35 mississippian, quapaw & southwest pots, along with cases upon on cases of artifacts. Well..they had them alright. However, not one single item in the whole auction was older than the auctioneer himself. I especially enjoyed the 20" duck river sword made of Edwards and the huge obsidian turkeytails along with the kiln fired pottery................

Good luck!

Re: artifact auction

Thanks Matt,
I would much rather go out and find my own so I would know for sure they were authentic. I have never been to an auction with this many "artifacts" in it. Hopefully the guy that owns them will be there to answer some questions. If not or if he doesn't seem quite on the up and up I will probably pass on them. Unless they go really cheap. I am really just curious to see what they end up selling for. Thanks for the advice,

Charlie

Re: artifact auction

Kudos to the auction house for at least saying they are repro's.

Re: artifact auction

If it's too good to be true it probably is not the real thing. There are some very good and reputable authenticators who take their work seriously. They too will make a mistake but it is the rare exception. Ask the people selling to give you time to send them to a well known and respected authenticator. If they will not definitely don't buy as they have something to hide.

Re: artifact auction

Yep a big bunch of repros,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mike

Re: artifact auction

If I don't find it myself I don't want it, means alot more to me when I'm the one who pulled it out of the ground and I have no question about it's authenticity.

Re: artifact auction

LOL,

Looks like a run through the EBAY indian relics pages. Agreed, dont think you will be finding too many "sleepers" in that lot. The large gray dovetail points came straight from the Crazy Crow Trading Post catalog or some similar source. I have a couple of them I bought for 20 bucks. The other stuff is pretty as art, but not worth much at all. I had rather go out and find a half dozen ancient mediocre points than spend a bunch on some "pretty" fake ones.

I do admire the flintknappers skill though. As art objects, they do make some nice stuff. Gotta love the fluted axes.

Thanks for the link...its always nice to see whats going on out there. I will grant you this, you would be amazed to see what that lot of repros will sell for. Always there are folks, either uninformed, looking to get lucky and find a sleeper, or that just have more dollars than sense and want a quick, pretty collection.

Happy Hunting,

Atlantis

Re: artifact auction

Yikes! Some neat looking stuff though, and some SKILLS >:( Unless you can pick up a few items CHEAP, which I doubt, I wouldn't waste the time, but some repos are selling for better money than the not perfectly formed real McCoys >:(

Re: artifact auction

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I am in no way any kind of expert I just really enjoy native american artifacts. I don't want to spend any kind of serious money on them, I would much rather find them myself. BUT...if there would happen to be something special there I would still love to have it. To me it might be worth the gamble if the price is right. I will post anything I get there (if anything) and hopefully I will get lucky.

Re: artifact auction

Charlie, looks to me, if you put a real point with a fake point, it's fake by association. :D
