Not meaning to knock any flint knappers out there, I know that there are very many with integrity, that do mark their creations.

But in the interest of learning, lets see some pieces that you members may have purchased that were obviously made to deceive, or that are just obvious fakes.

here's the one I got my lesson on, and it did come with a coa. Another reason to get two sometimes. Anyone can make a mistake or overlook something.

How did you finally determine that it is a fake?

Well, back then i knew a little less than I know now, but It didn't have the same feel as other artifacts I had. I also noticed there was really nothing to see under the scope no mineral, or organic deposits, the hinge fractures kind of melted into the form, and were not as distinct as I remembered seeing them on other pieces. I knew not all material patinates the same, and that in some areas pieces show little patina at all. It seemed suspect, so I thought it best to send it off. One expert contradicted the paper from a popular authenticator, so I went for a 3rd. It became 2 saying bad, and 1 saying good. I had to agree with the majority, I also had a lot of input from others in the artifact community about this individuals papers that was less than impressive..

Man you guys are killing me.Why would you want to put yourself through all this.Ok do you have to shop around and find an authenticator you can trust. When you find an artifact in a place youve found others thats not good enough? You then take it to an individual that youve had to weed out the bad authenticators from. This sounds like quite the process.Would this be authenticating the authenticator? This is not for me.My hobby is not that complicated when it becomes that it is no longer a carefree pastime its a job.

Quito when you buy an artifact is one of the factors on you buying it the fact that it has a coa? What makes you decide if you have it authenticated again. Also how much does this procedure cost?

Killing you? Well that a pretty strong statement.... Put myself through what? You make it sound like it is a lot of work.

"Ok do you have to shop around and find an authenticator you can trust."

Not really, but you could I guess. Fortunately I met a decent authenticator right away, and he told me about a few others who he respected. Turned out they were all highly regarded, and still are.

"When you find an artifact in a place youve found others thats not good enough?"

It's good enough for me. BUT, if I were to find something special, I would get to an expert so that is properly documented, and authenticated. You have had a few other very good reasons already given you in another thread, so I am not going to re-hash it.

"You then take it to an individual that youve had to weed out the bad authenticators from. This sounds like quite the process.Would this be authenticating the authenticator? This is not for me."

Now you are getting a little carried away with your thinking me thinks.

"My hobby is not that complicated when it becomes that it is no longer a carefree pastime its a job".

I've found the only thing complicated that I have run into, is a few knuckle heads and their wild idea's, and they really aren't that complicated.

I rarely send anything to be authenticated anymore, but I do have an authenticator that will often paper what I come up because he wants to handle it, and get his name on it.:-) BUT, also, a lot, not allot, of times, the high end pieces already come with a reputable authenticators opinion.

Any more questions mainejman?
