Hello All,

I found the below many years ago and would like to know if anyone has any opinions as to what they might be. I know they are made of what we call iron ore around here in South Jersey.

The first smaller "rock" as you can tell by one of the pics is very smooth, worn? If I had slightly smaller hands, my hand would fit perfectly into grooves with my thumb on one side and my fingers on the other so that my fingers woudl be wrapped around the rounder side. I tried to capture grooves in pics....

The larger "rock" is much rougher than the first.

Any ideas would be so much appreciated.

my first thought on those pieces is debris from iron work. was there a railroad track nearby?

Thanks for the idea track.

If a few miles is considered nearby, then yes :)

The entire area is littered with the remnants of iron furnaces dating from the Revolutionary War-huge (I've seen them as big as +/-12"x12") pieces of raw iron ore and slag in all shapes/sizes/colors. I was thinking that the rectangular piece was worked in some way by "modern" (later than 1800's or so) tools, but the smaller piece fits too perfectly in my hand and is so smoothly worn it just has me wondering.

I think you have your answer
