Honestly.. just walk up to the house.. introduce yourself and tell them why you are there. seems to work well.. ironically.. I have been zeroing in on a site and stopped by one of the house and got permission. In addition, I got the names of the other home owners in the area I am interested in hunting. I stopped by three more houses.. no one home at two of them and the third seemed ok with it but wanted to check with her husband so I just added 10 acres and should be able to pick up another 100+.

I never hurts to ask.. the worse they can say is no.. and at lest you tried!!
