Hi All,

Wow it has been a long time since my last post >:( But South Africa has been going through so much rain that there is too much, and too high weeds to cope with.... A bad year.

Anyway, I have just returned from a well deserved 3 week holiday, 1 week in the mountains, and the other 2 weeks at the coast.

It is the first time in my metal detecting career, that I have detected at the beach  We went to a place on the Natal south Coast called Margate.... It is a very nice scenic place to stay, and the weather was just great.

Note the plastic jug that was used to retrieve the treasure, it worked great..... ::)

Another first was that I borrowed another detector (Lone Star) and was able to have the wife join me detecting (her first time).

Last year, all the beaches were completely washed away in very bad weather, so all the detector people are complaining of lack of good finds, I was just happy to get a chance at detecting again :icon_sunny:
Well my detecting turned up R14.38 (Rands and Cents), a small coca cola button, and a lead fishing sinker.
The wife found lots of coins, and the only piece of jewlery, which was a cast skull.... Junk jewlery >:( but she did enjoy going out detecting, and wants to go again....

I know that this is not the greatest treasure ever found, but to us it was a very special time with each other, on a well deserved break... That was the biggest treasure for us. It was the most coins that I have found in such a short time though hahahahaha.....

Hope that you have enjoyed our trip, as much as we did.....

God bless
Peter

Monty, great to hear from you again

This country has become so much against hunting that camera hunting is the way to go. At resorts etc, they have signs that say "When hunting, take nothing but pictures" or something like that, camera hunting has become a big thing.

My heart is now great, I am back to normal.... which is fantastic after so many years of problems.... I just pray that you can be the same as me..... I feel great these days ;D Lots of the people here prayed for me, and it worked

God bless
Peter

Nothing more powerful than pray 8)

Hi Crusader,

You are very right about prayer  Great to hear from you again, I have been a bit quiet lately although I have been reading lots of posts that the people have written. How is sunny England treating you these days? Still finding lots I trust.....

God bless

While on holiday, I came across a small shop that was selling fold up shovels.... I bought the smallest shovel that I have see so far.... Will give it a good test in our hard South African soil....
I bought one of those exact shovels from Harbor Freight Tools and it seemed good, but the little piece of metal holding the Spade to the handle is too thin and fragile to take the force of shoveling up some dirt. Mine bent the first time I really had to dig with it. I would return it and get a Lesche Groundshark or similar all steel welded spade. All of the "cheap" digging tools seem good at the time, but they will always end up being wasted money. I have broken enough cheap shovels now to pay for a Lesche Groundshark and I still don't have one! Gotta start saving again.

Thanks for the great pictures! Very interesting looking coins in Africa! HH

Hi RootMaster, thanx for the reply. I did make a pick out of 2 lawmower blades which I have found to be very good... I saw a similar picture from somewhere, umm maybe on this site... and made up one.

Peter,

That is one nice pick that you have made. Looks like it is a lot stronger than what we can buy here in here in the states. Thanks for taking us with you on your vacation. Looks like Pauline did pretty well. Has she been bitten by the "detecting bug" yet?? Great pics. Looks like both of you had a great time.

Hello Ron, great to hear from you again  I found that with the ground that we have here which is very much sun baked and hard, you need a tool that can handle lots of stress..... The only tool is a tool that you can make your self.... as I have bounght many and all have failed. The pick is made from two lawn mower blades that have been welded together and ground into a usable shape.... lawnmower blades are very hard wearing  I have used this pick, and have found that it is the only tool I need to take with me when detecting, it is incredible and easy to use.

Pauline really did enjoy the detecting, and I am sure will want to go when I go again. At this time though, I must buy another detector from somewhere as the detector she used was borrowed, and the chap does not want to sell it, even though he has not used it in years :tard: But I hope and pray that yes the bug has got her.... but time will tell.

God bless
Peter

Peter, OY! now that's a digger mate! Nice job on recycling something that out to be an excellent use.

BTW: I forgot to mention I bought a sweet trowel from Target that said on the package "unbreakable" and I thought, hey... they took the time to put that one very distinct word on there, it must be tested and proven. Here's my $7. Well I snapped that bugger like celery when it got caught behind a root one day. All I know is that thick STEEL is the only metal that a good shovel is made of, stainless, cold rolled or hardened.. whatever, STEEL.

I heard mention of the "skull" found but didn't see where it was and got sidetracked with the gorgeous pictures. Your wife did very well for herself! Wicked cool skull pendant and congrats on getting your wife out hunting with you. I hope she goes again!
