Ok. Let me just start by being upfront. This point was here in the farmhouse when we bought the place, down in an old couch cushion they left here 13 plus years ago. Found it again in a drawer recently. Haven’t put it with my collection of stuff we’ve actually found ourselves, while out working couple of the rock overhangs. I would love any thoughts / opinions of this one. Sorry for crappy evening pics. Tried to show the worked edges for you guys. I’m not convinced it’s ancient, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the drive-by ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611880887.819944.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611880917.375939.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611880932.407916.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611880944.543126.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611880956.465853.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611880966.770431.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611880982.382330.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611881028.248114.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1611881049.549192.webp

Maybe it’s legit, but i didn’t even think the material was right at first, thought it was plastic or vinyl until I clanked it against some chert. Thanks again

It sorta looks like it’s from India that one side looks like a slab with worked edges but the other side looks better

I am no expert but it looks nothing like the works in your collection that I see in the background- as a comparison. I vote, no.

It is really flat and smooth minus where it had the edges put on it. Maybe it is of the gum ball variety! It doesn’t feel or look quite like anything I’ve found here. Couple better pics

The other thing is that the basal stem and notching doesn't look like it is functional. I could be very wrong but hey, I've had two beers and I am feeling bold!

boy howdy that one is 100% modern.... not even worth wondering about. your instincts were SPOT ON!

I’m not sure I have found some funky looking points before!

I agree,it might turn into prank drop for next time my brother comes out to the overhang with me ! Get his juices flowing for a few minutes. Thanks for insight folks. This one won’t be making it into my collection. Have a great day!

If you have access to a black light, they can show differences in the patina, new flaking shines.

Good choice to play trick on brother with. Seed the gravel road by the house, or rocks going into restaurant. It can be some funny stuff.

My $.02 worth...

I'll be the first to admit it looks suspect at first glance but from Pic2 in post #4, it looks to have a rounded appearance rather than completely flat. It may have been made from a smooth, oval, somewhat flat, piece of water-worn gravel w/cortex still present and continuing on to the tapering stem on one side. I know what the modern India agate pieces look like and that one doesn't fit the mold of a typical, corner-notched India import. From the pics, I'm not convinced it's modern.

Ok. Well that’s two votes of not certain the other way. Regardless, I’m really much more into the pieces I find myself or with my family crew. This little piece was just a bonus that someone else possibly found or whatever. I will hang on to it and just keep it completely separate from my personal finds. The one side is definitely more raised and rounded, but not much. Thanks for everyone’s feedback on this one. I’ve been back and forth on it since re-finding it.

I agree with Tdog’s $.02.
It’s tough to even speculate on that one.
My son and I have dabbled with knapping native lithics into very crude and entry level tools and points. It’s possible that it originated from a similar scenario.
However, it’s not out of the question, that an expedient and crude point was manufactured from waste material, or a flat river pebble. I have a couple personal finds -projectile points with the stone rind (or cortex) left on one side.
Provenance/Context: Someone else’s Abandoned Couch.

I wouldn't bet money on it being modern. I've seen some pretty funky authentic ones made with flat sides. Expedient is the word I think.

In the photos in natural light the flaking is newer than the center of the point
That doesn't say it a fake but it leads you that way. It is not from India and it is a useable point, a lot of points don't have notches or flared ears to tie too.

So, I am going to include a few of the inherited ones , plus my couch find at the bottom. I found all these lacking the craftsmanship of the rest of the collection. Maybe they are all legit and old. None of these strike me as authentic or ancient. Could be wrong, but the three right above my couch find are all very similar. Maybe all are good. Did anyone dabble in flint knapping? Kinda looks similar to what I was making for a while

He did not, but he’s a real wheeler dealer type guy, said a few he had he had acquired when buying other collections of stuff. So they could certainly be just display stuff knapped in past 50 years. The other ones I question almost seem like a sandy Shelly material. Not what we find around here. Thanks for looking
