AW Hunt = Wheats, Relics, Token, Silver

Hello All. Got out for 2-HRs or so after work to my latest permission, a 1920's era home near Clermont, FL. I finished off the bit of un-dug area still left and then gridded the front yard in the opposite direction.

Did OK with (2) wheats, a strange button, toy piece, toasty Al token, and bit of unexpected silver. Can't tell what the silver thing went to and I still gotta research the button and the token.

Hello John. Thanks for the reply and tip on Foley, FL. After soaking in oil for a couple of days, I believe the token says "MARSHALL TIMBER CO, INC. FOLEY FLA". I see some references on the net for a Marshall Timber Co. near Foley FL incorporated in 1930. That part of FL is still a big timber area. 1930 seems a bit late for the issue of company script but who knows.

I do not see this token listed in a quick internet search so maybe it's a maverick. I appreciate the Foley FL tip without it I don't think I would have been able to tack this one down. HH C9.

I think the token is like an old "rewards" program.... I have found tokens, almost identical to yours, that read: Naples Lumber, designed just like yours....

With that latter pic, I agree on what it says. The word Timber is certain now. No the token is not a maverick - by definition a maverick is a token without town & state. Yours, however, is what would be called "unlisted" in that it is not in the current FL book. Or the lumber company token book for that matter.

It is too bad that the image of the original incorporation papers are not online. I wonder if (like in my state) the Secretary of State office just scans past papers on request. It would be fun to see who the Marshall was, etc. I'm guessing that the Marshall operation had offices in Foley, but the actual sawmill was somewhat distant and perhaps moved around. The workers lived near the mill so the company provided a store for them so they wouldn't have to go into town for provisions. Just as seen in mining and other operations with a "company store", workers could receive advances on their pay, but they would receive tokens rather than cash.

At least in the left side of the country, 1930 is not late for company scrip.

I'd encourage you to post this piece on tokencatalog.com. I can do it with your permission if you don't want to, but I'd need to know the diameter of the token.
