Was searching craigslist for a dishwasher. Ended up finding an ad for a FSBO home in a historic neighborhood. Emailed asking for permission and was surprised to get a very pleasant response allowing me. Wasted no time and went over the following morning. Homes in this neighborhood date to 1870 to 1930, the house I hunted was 1873.

Brought the 5x8 for the ATP assuming I'd hit some trash. The front of the yard wasnt too bad but the back was miserable. Took my time on the front and dug all the really good signals first. Then went back and dug the iffy higher signals. Passed on so much loud junk that I can only imagine how much is hiding underneath. I may be heading back to spend more time. Didn't want to dig too much as this was a house they are trying to sell and the lawn was "crumbly" making plugs difficult.

The land between the sidewalk and the street is where the best finds turned up. I freaked a bit when I pulled this first thing up. Kept thinking about all the awesome stuff which could be inside. I wasn't disappointed but really was wishing for gold.

The earing is stamped STERLING with a G above and R below. It seemed like it had been in the ground a long time as it was really compacted with dirt. Can't get any markings on the case but it's pretty well trashed.

Then about 20 feet away I got a 81 on the ATP. Dug a penny at 4" and figured that was it. Put the plug back and started to move on. Went back over the hole as I normally do and got a SOLID but faint 92. It was right next to the plug for the penny and it definitely wasn't sounding before. I really got pumped as I haven't had a repeatable 90's vdi since getting the ATP. It was showing deep so I cut the plug as deep as I could. At about 7" this thing popped out. Wasn't sure what it was at first but new it wasn't silver. Thought about it being a token but it was way too heavy and thick to be something other than coin. I had an idea what it was but figured there was no way I'd find one after only really MDing for about 100 hours total. Well, got it home and cleaned with a bit of soap and water and VOILA! Not in the best of shape but I'm not complaining.

1847 Large Cent.... Now, how rare are these? How many people have found one? What would be the best way to get the most detail out of this thing? I've so far soaked a bit in warm soapy water and tooth picked the grime. Not interested in value as much as just being able to enjoy the detail more.

This was my first really old hunt and my first time asking permission. The ATP and I are getting along very well. I'd say I'm getting pretty good at picking the targets from the junk but still have work to do. Can't wait to get some more historic sights under my belt too.
