Axe or Hatchet & spoon!

A friend of mine got permission to search some fields by an old farm house.. Supposedly troops marched through the area during the civil war.. We headed over for a few hours this morning.. I was able to find this axe or hatchet head... Not sure of age? Any thoughts? The owner also gave us a tour of an old barn he has....We found some old utensils in the barn... He gave us the spoon... It looks fairly old and says US on it.... He said we were welcome back any time... We look forward to returning.........

If it has US on it I believe it to be military. May have came out of a mess kit

Cool Axe and spoon! :)

Re: Axe or Hatchet & spoon!

The spoon looks to be marked :STERLING" Mess utensils were produced from aluminum and featured holes in the ends of the handles so they can be looped around the mess kit handle when dipped in boiling water for cleaning. Might be a Mess Hall or Officers Club spoon. Neat find
