Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

Earthworks and I hit Babe Ruth's Summer residence today -- I had been there before and found a Barber dime, a few mercs and lots of wheats. The Babe used to spend a lot of time there after he retired. Today we both found several wheats -- I found a '44 Wash quarter and Earthworks found a '63 Wash quarter and '54 Rosie. Religious medal I found at earlier site in the day. Here's a link to an article about the time Babe spent there. His bedroom was upstairs in the photo take by Earthworks below. It was a nice day out for some silver. (We ended the day with chili dogs and milk shakes -- talk about a perfect ending!)

Tht's pretty cool Bergie, to think that The Babe might have owned these treasures at one time. Cool finds, congrats!

Smiles!

Re: Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

Hey BDoo, the Babe died in 1948 if I remember, so don't think he held the quarters, but just to be able to hunt that place would be a great memory!!

Re: Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

Nice, Bergie. Is that the farm he bought for his wife before they were married?

Mike

Re: Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

True, Jack, but we found lots of wheats from pre-48!

Re: Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

Nice finds and a great honor to detect his old home. I would feel honored.

Re: Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

Yeah buddy, a great honor indeed!...He will always be the best in my book.

Nice finds and thank for posting the finds and the BABE!

Nice silver, congrats!

Re: Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

If I am not mistaken the Babe was raised part of his life my the Catholic church. The religous metal may have very well been his. Nice finds....

Re: Babe Ruth's Summer Home & Silvers

babe or george herman ruth was raised from age 7 to 19 at the st marys industrial school for boys in baltimore (orphanage) his folks were dirt poor working class slobs (bar tender /waitress) with too many kids to feed and at the age of 7 george was "signed" over to the orphanage to raise ---his "family" didn't visit him at the holidays and on the one sunday per month that was allowed basically they "forgot" he existed---george was rather a unruly kid but grew rather fond of one of the preist and took him as a "father" figure---the father steered him toward sports ---george loved baseball and excelled at it---at 19 the then manager of the baltimore team signed ruth (baltimore was a minor league --feeder team for the red sox)
the minor league team manager / scout was known to be one of the best---when ruth showed up for work the other players said-- "that must be his new "babe" as in find. the name stuck. few people today talk about his pitching but in the beginning that was his strong suit--- on his best days he pitched as well as any modern star and better than most good pitchers on his worst days. ---its his batting that hes known for ----and his great loving heart for kids ---he never forgot what it was to be "alone" and always visited the hospitals and orphanages often---he was no saint however he did like the "good life" of fine food, fine booze, fine cigars and bad women and was a bit of a rogue at times. his last official major league job was in 38 as a base coach for new york---he helped to sell war bonds during WWII and was a "icon" of his day--- he died in 1948 at 53 years of age in new york----the catholic medal and pre 1948 coins could have easily been his ---he loved the outdoors --hunting,fishing,golf ---(he became quite ill in late 1947 and went to new york for "treatment" his illness was rather bad it and made him almost bed ridden) he finally died in april of 48---(any pre 1948 coins found there could have been handled by ruth ---esp the 1944 quarter (sweet) and any pre 48 wheaties---maybe you can't "prove" it to some folks but its a fair chance that it was ---so nice none the less in my book--- by the way I have a negative / and from it ---a photo of him "swinging" at the ball--it was a clean miss sadly -- the ball seen in the catchers mitt. --I make a few copies from it now and then for freinds--Ivan
