found thyis piece of brass today at the site,its 1 1/4" long1/2' wide,and sissiors back and forth.

I think closing the devise only has the effect of changing the inward facing 'points' to outward facing 'points.

First it is on the wrong side as shown. Notice the lines.
You may have a pair of simple calipers. Better photos of the ends is also necessary for this item, as is any spots that may have been broke.

Visualizing the 'outward' angle of the broken ends, when the device is in the closed position, I'm calling it, a broken pair of tongs.

Looks pretty darn familiar....can't place it for sure but I'm thinking it's part of some type of electric motor. A part that had springs attached? spun and opened up as the speed increased....

It is brass, the ends look broken,may be a wick trimmer.
