I know it's in the 20s, but I had to detect one more time before I start Mediterranean Cuisine. I hit the spot near where I found the purse and coins, except I was feeling daring and went closer to the Campus's President's house. I've found 50 old coins from the area and still believed there was more I started out with a few little bullets, and switched over to 3khz mode. It's been 3 weeks into January and I wanted to find silver today. I found an indian head cent after about an hour, the back was really nice, but I couldn't read the date at that point.

My penny/dime ratio is almost 1:1 for the site, so i knew i was in the right area. I dug up a crown bottlecap and 2 halves of a can, somebody's been drinking where they shouldn't be! A little later, I got a strong penny/dime signal at 4" that sounded big. Since it was as deep as the indian, it was most likely a silver dime. Or a piece of copper wire. I carefully dug it out of the near frozen ground, took off my glove, pulled some dirt out of the hole and out came a dirty silver dime. I was hoping for a seated at first. I looked at the back. O.

I turned over and looked at the date and let out a yell so loud President Ryan and his family almost heard me for sure! It was an 1896 O, the second key coin I've found from the site. I know it's not the 95 O, but with a mintage of 610,000 it's wasn't in everyone's pockets back then. I'm just in shock to have found 2 now in less than a year.

I rinsed off both coins a bit. The indian is a 1900, the same year as the first one from the site.

I can easily read liberty with the loupe on the dime and the top of the band is seperated. Definetly F and possibly VF.

I dont want to do anything besides rinse and air dry it. Ideas on how to safely remove the dirt will be helpful. What a way to start of 2008!

super pics and def worth freezing your butt off for.

Great find! Is that the mighty Hudson in the background?

Nice finds ... I only use the heated peroxide method and after a good soak I wash them with dish detergent, water, and use a denture brush ... this usually works well unless the coin is worn out anyway ... congratz and continued good hunting ~ Jimmy!

go way to get your fix,bet that felt good,NICE finds wooo.

Yes, that photo is looking south at the Hudson and the little gazebo in the background. At night, you can see the Mid-Hudson Bridge lit up

The CIA strickes again!!
That's a nice dime. The back of that penny is really nice also.

WTG SMS88, glad you were able to squeeze in that hunt so we could see that great looking dime. I'm in NYC so I know how cold it was, Good Job!

What a wonderful site to detect, congrats on the key dates barbers. I bet that there's plenty of more goodie waiting to be dug up. Continued Success and HH.

Great Find, I'm wanting to find a seated dime too, but I'd take a barber especially a key date anytime, anyday. It looks like its in very fine shape. I agree with just rinsing it off and letting it air dry. Great Job.

nice key date. hope there is a 95-O out there!!

There's always the possibility. This is the 14th barber dime from the site and 7th with a mintmark. Other mintmarked dates i've dug include 1892 o, 1893 s, 1897 s, 1901 o, 1906 s, and another 1896 o. The people who owned the land must've had many out of region friends. New Orleans is about 1475 miles away and San Fransisco is about twice that

Nice job at finding more silver at your spot, and getting a semi-key barber!! I got a '96 O last year, but wasn't in as good condition as yours.

You have found a great detecting spot; one that many md'ers would dream to find.

Nnnnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiiccccccccccccccccccccceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!

Try demineralized water, for a long soak with frequent changes. A soft brush won't hurt; do it under water for minimum abrasion.

Wow....Sweet coin! I can't believe what a great haul you've had there!

Congrats,

SMS, another great score!!

Question though. Do really expect us to beleive that you are going to be a chef after posting all those great finds??? Maybe a cook for the Mel Fisher crew....

How about a smokin hot recipe for those of us that also know our way around the kitchen??

Congrats on the finds, good luck with your med eats. How much more time do you have at the CIA?

Hal
