Did a little sneaking around today in an abandoned old hamlet, looking for new bottle dumps, no detector in hand. Stumbled across one of the abandoned cemeteries, one of the headstones had 4 Standing Lib's across the top of headstone. I am a bad karma type of guy like no bananas on boat while fishing type of thing. I was tempted, but the little common sense I have restrained me....

What would have you done?

switch with clad and move on what would be the diff

the guy that died didn't leave them and
i dought if they came from his pocket
what were the years any key dates

Same thing as you did Mucky. Your a good man!!

The dates on the coins were all the same, 1917...ironically, I think its the same date he died.

Don't know if you were at DT, but there are still a lot of relatives from there who do go back to visit. Best to observe the "do not disturb" ethic. Sad thing is that sooner or later some kid will come along and take them and spend them at the local store.

Yes it was DT by the OJ Cemetery, It is sad that your right Gunsil, that some kid/adult will pocket them, may the boatman not take them to the other side.

I didn't touch them, stayed a safe distance away. I have bad luck to begin with, If it was raining P, I would get hit with a D. (Trying to keep it PG13). I think way too much about potential outcomes in life..

LOL I know what you mean on the luck thing :laughing7:

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Ev'ryone you meet
Why in the world are we here
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you're ev'rywhere
Come and get your share

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Come on and on and on on on
Yeah yeah, alright, uh huh, ah

by the way, this reminded me of a story of a Cemetery that is Semi Local to me.

IF I remember the story correctly

when Relatives visit the Cemetery they line quarters across the top.
They are always gone when they come back & they reline them across the top again.

it is believed it was done as a payment to the grounds keeper.

I am not sure if this still goes on,
the story was recently handed down to me

go back with some 5 minuet epoxy and put them there permanently

I new a guy who silver solder a nail to a fifty cent piece
pounded it down to his steps in the winter and he would watch the mail man try to take it
he would look out the window a laugh
finally out comes the pocket knife that's when he would go to the door
and the mail man would stop deliver and go on his way

...I have to respect the people who are no longer living in DT who granted me permission to hunt their old town on their terms, and have granted me great success.

I was not there but can see me leaving things as they were. The coins were not lost or discarded, were I hunting dump sites they would be out of the objective. Were I robbing tombstone trinkets they would have gone with me. I,ll remove litter or a branch when I,m puttering around the graves I visit on occasion but leave the rest on principle.
Wonder if a detecting partner left them,or if someone had a standard wager with the resident? I won,t leave anything for the groundskeeper any time soon. All ready caused me enough work hitting a very large marker I re positioned.

Apparently the coins have been there since 1917, doesn't sound like someone will be taking them any time soon. Locally there is a lonely grave off in a farm field with a dilapidated Victorian iron fence around it. Forty years ago I had an old timer tell me he could could remember the funeral, he was a little kid, and was very impressed that they buried the man with a $20 gold piece on each eye. I'm certainly not going to dig that up, or pick up the coins off a head stone. The character of a person is what you do when nobody is watching, and I'm not boasting about being better than anyone else, perhaps more spooky than most, but in my world, what goes around comes around. There are people now (archies come to mind), and historically there were/are people that even robbed fresh graves. I'm not one. One thing I've often wondered, do gold teeth get past the mortician? Note the way the military respects the dead, it would be good if everyone did as they do.
