Well, I knew with all the Barber quarters showing up of late @ T-Net I'd eventually find one also. I'm learning you can't always trust the SMARTFIND screen on the SE operating in ALL METAL-SOUND/FERROUS. This 1911s Barber registered as a bottle cap but intuition convinced me to dig. At 8 inches or so, I saw her face. The two 1916 Barber dimes were found last month not three feet apart. One, I gouged royally; it was in roots. One's a D; the other; an S. I haven't found two silver quarters in a very long time during the same hunt. The 1956-D was found in a private yard just this morning as well as the 1911s Barber. I thought it was going to be a great day but I'd forgotten the kiddos are out of school on Fridays. My first dig was the silver earring. It didn't take the kids long to become little pests, stealing my takes and my digging tools! :) I told the owner; "I'll be back!"

Very nice looking Barber Quarter there, GRB. Where's the mercs and rosies?? ;D Somebody must have beat you to those pesky common silvers.

Congrats on all your finds!!

just try to imagine who all has touched those coins b4 they were lost. To me that is what makes detecting great.

One more thing, I've learned to dig several targets in a new area as the soil seems to change from one area to the next around here and effects just where the cursor lands in SmartFind.

I've not noticed that but will have to keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the idea.

I don't have a SE yet but I have experienced this at a park with my soverign. On a 180 scale I heard a solid signal at about 169 or 170, I passed the first one but when I heard the same exact signal a second time I dug that one. It was a indian head penny so I went back to the other signal and you guessed it, it also was a indian head. Indians usually hit about 176, same as zinc. The area was a old grandstand area but with a new park built over it. I don't really worry about other detectorists because the area looks way too modern. Even if another detectorist hits it they are not hunting for deep signals.

Keep up the good work and you have a great story to tell about your intuition.

Man, it's a lovely day out; I'm leaving in a few minutes to go back to The House of Brats!
I hope they are gone to school today. :)

Capt. SE!
My friend, I think you have found all the Rosies and Mercs in the world! That SE of yours is a vacuum cleaner for silver!
Honestly, I find the rare Merc & Rosie occassionally. In fact, I found a 1925- Merc. Saturday morning but gave it to the home owner in appreciation for his letting me hunt his yard. I may drop by there again today also as I only worked the front of his house walking away with 5 coins. The home owner was a hawk; watching my every move, making me a little uncomfortable.

Sunny & Bartman!
To me silver is nice anyway you find it and knowing that my hands are the first to touch some of it in decades is both uplifting and depressing! Me, for my gain! Them, for their loss! Lol!

Speaking of different detectors and the way each reads different coins, I'm not so sure the old timers were wrong. Many of them dig/dug all signals. I think most detectors, even the best are only designed to give a "general" idea what is in the ground. Of course, it is up to the user to figure out whether to dig or not. Of late, asking permission to hunt private areas, mostly homes I find it impossible to dig every signal, resorting to concentrate only on the ones sounding off a promise of value. I'm still fooled a lot. But the number of holes, which tend to turn even the nicest of homeowners off is kept to a minimum. :)

Thanks again everyone for meandering my thread!

Re: Barbara came knocking on 1911 --EXCELLENT!

I haven't felt too good in the last week, so I haven't detected.
I'm hoping to feel better tomorrow and to get out with my F-4 again!
Looks like you are learning to use that Explorer!
I tried, back when they 1st came out, in fact I owned 2 different ones, the 1st and 2nd model.
It just baffled me, to tell the truth.
Not enough brain cells left I guess? :-)
I finally gave up trying!
