Well, I knew with all the Barber quarters showing up of late @ T-Net I'd eventually find one also. I'm learning you can't always trust the SMARTFIND screen on the SE operating in ALL METAL-SOUND/FERROUS. This 1911s Barber registered as a bottle cap but intuition convinced me to dig. At 8 inches or so, I saw her face. The two 1916 Barber dimes were found last month not three feet apart. One, I gouged royally; it was in roots. One's a D; the other; an S. I haven't found two silver quarters in a very long time during the same hunt. The 1956-D was found in a private yard just this morning as well as the 1911s Barber. I thought it was going to be a great day but I'd forgotten the kiddos are out of school on Fridays. My first dig was the silver earring. It didn't take the kids long to become little pests, stealing my takes and my digging tools! :) I told the owner; "I'll be back!"

Very nice on those Barbers!!From observing my friends hunt with Explorers it's only going to get better.

Nothing like digging a hole to see her looking right back up at you.
love those Barbers,
Pro-

i'd go back there too! congrats on the great finds.

Nice finds GRB---That is some sweet looking silver

Depth, sound, and knowledge of your detector will do better than any screen on any detector. Congrats on following your intuition and being rewarded with a Barber Quarter!!

Hello Everyone!
It was a fun day; the finds just happened which is always nice.

Speaking of my SE, I usually hunt with SOUNDS set to CONDUCT. This choice of setting allows the user to hunt by sound, varying with types of metal. However, this week I've been hunting with SOUNDS set to FERROUS. All iron makes low blat sounds, non-ferrous; high pitched. Or, so in theory; rust/bottle caps can fool you. In ALL METAL, the VD has been spot on. Or, so I thought. Sometimes, I think digging all targets is the absolute best thing any Metal Detectorist can do. :)

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the comments!

Treasure Tales!
No, sadly that Buffalo's not showing any date.
I absolutely love finding them but those with readable dates are a lot more funner! :)

very nice job on the silver! The minelab explorer I hear sure does great things!

Nice finds!

Just gouged my first silver today, a '42 Merc. Luckily it was already a bit scraped up before.

Was it a solid 0,0? Higher on the CON? Bouncing at all in any particular direction?

Good morning!

DetectingFreak!
The SE is a great machine but not infallible. I now wonder how many targets I passed over thinking them junk.
My list of iffies has definitely increased; I dig iffies! :P)

BlackX!
I hunt in SMARTFIND-ALL METAL-SOUND/FERROUS-SENSITIVITY as high as allowed/then turning SEMI-AUTO SENSITIVITY on-GAIN@10. The Barber was shown center screen-top. This is the area bottle caps generally register on both my SEs, in my area. The target didn't falter. I have found toggling between IRON MASK off to on helps identify targets once located. One more thing, I've learned to dig several targets in a new area as the soil seems to change from one area to the next around here and effects just where the cursor lands in SmartFind. I will probably go back to SOUNDS/CONDUCT; I think I will have better peace of mind hearing the variabilities of the different metals opposed to low blats or high pitches. :)

Thank you for your interest!

DetectingFreak!

At first I thought you meant me and wondered how you knew. :)

Ah, those bottle caps. Whew! I'll dig most anything some of the time but I've never found a good target on a solid 0,0 and that had me wracking my brain trying to remember where I'd heard that really good sounding (on ferrous) 0,0 target last week. Now I can relax a bit. Yeah, I always dig that top part of the screen even if I "know" it's going to be a screw cap. There I have been pleasantly surprised a few times.

I have found toggling between IRON MASK off to on helps identify targets once located.

I do that too if I'm not already running wide-open--which is most of the time. I've even found myself toggling between wide-open in the IM screen and the SF screen. :D Though lately I've been playing around with a severely masked screen to start out for the first five minutes or so, so that I get that "silver" pitch dialed in to my head. Was still in that mode when I hit the 1817 LC the other day.

One more thing, I've learned to dig several targets in a new area as the soil seems to change from one area to the next around here and effects just where the cursor lands in SmartFind.

I've not noticed that but will have to keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the idea.

I will probably go back to SOUNDS/CONDUCT; I think I will have better peace of mind hearing the variabilities of the different metals opposed to low blats or high pitches.

While I've played around with it some, I suspect I won't go back to conduct. I like being able to hear where the iron is clearly. Though, of course, trying to differentiate between iron falsing and iron next to, over, or under a good target seems to be a perpetual challenge. Was trying a new spot yesterday and for some reason--perhaps the soil change aspect you mentioned--a lot of the good targets had a significant iron sound in them part of the time.
