* Barber * V's * Buffalo * Injun * Wheats * Tax Token *
I love this lot. But I hate having to clean coins. :P
Back to the lot yesterday with Terri. The day started out slow with finds of half gone modern cents. Got a few wheats in the mix and a tax token, but nothing to write home about. After a couple of hours I found a spot that held a few keeper coins.
First was an Injun, 1900, just underneath the surface. It was all washed out looking, but I'll take it! Next was a V nickel, 1889, then a buffalo with a wheat in the same hole. A few feet over was another V, 1903, and then a bit on over aaaaaa....well....I didn't know what? :P
Looked like a dime size...could see a bit of writing on the back, but not sure. I drop it to see if it has that 'sound'. Yep. Silver.
But dang it all! It's another coin that's going to have to be cleaned.
I get home and find that the ultrasonic cleaner has arrived! I decided to try the dime in it first. After a zillion three minute at a time sessions, I can see that it's a Barber. It cleaned a bunch of the crud off, and I can tell what it is, but still lots of black gunk on it. Patience running thin, I decide to get the baking soda out. I have nothing to lose on this terribly crusty coin, and I wanted to know the date. A couple of minutes and I see that it's a 1911 Barber.
I also put that Barber quarter from last week in for a clean, but after dipping it twice, I decided to leave it alone and put it into a coin holder. I hate cleaning coins.
While we were at the lot, the owner came over to chat a couple of times throughout the day.
He's a really nice guy. Told us a little story on how one of his neighbors came to him last week and asked if he knew that there had been three girls over on his lot scavenging around.
Oh.....she thinks I'm a scavenger?
He tells her, "Yes! They have my permission to be there and they are metal detecting." He tells her what all we've been finding and that he would much rather someone find those coins rather than them stay in the ground!
Also gave us another site to hunt!~
He brought over a very neat coin for us to see too!
Here's yer cammo, Nicky!
It was a fun day!
