Hello,
Found this last wkend near an old home site. What I'm puzzled about is that the oval hole in the middle of the tapered part
Doesn't run thru to other side. And there's no hole at the bottom, so how does the liquid flow? Thanks! Snaps

How big is it? Could it be for a gas valve instead?

Some of those tap handle don't allow flow through them, but, instead just connect two passageways that are next to each other.

Update! Messed around cleaning and prying around and removed this piece out of the bottom- appears to have a letter "P" stamped on. Does this reinforce or dismiss the gas valve idea? Thanks!

What you have pulled out looks to me to be a rimfire shell casing that someone stuck in the barrel tap, measure it to confirm.

Nailed it! Same size as a .22 lr.
I venture to say when guy put it in there, the tap had been "retired" for quite some time! Much thanks!
