Here is some photos taken yesterday from Tampere battlefield. Whole city was frontline then between Red and White Finland. Bullets, shrapnels and shells damaged many buildings and even gravestones in Kalevankangas cemetery. There were hundreds of casualties in both sides in Kalevankangas. Damages can still be seen. Building is local hospital once defended by reds.

Very interesting pictures. It is quite rare to still fine battle scars on almost anything here in the US. There are some homes and buildings in our Civil War areas that still bear the signs of war. I'd like to see more if you care to post them.

Looks like the bullets were flying that day. Very impressive pictures that show and hold the time in our history.

Thanks,
daleshark.

"uh oh, a Civil War era building. Quick, tear it down, we need a WAL-MART!"
::)

Well probably LIDL more than WAl-Mart here in Finland :P.

A different perspective on the effects of war. Thanks for sharing the pics. I too, would like to see more.

More photos from today from Messukylä church and local music club. Walls have been damaged badly in this old custom building that is today club. Also some old statues have still bullet holes.

humm fighting in the graveyard --- how odd that had to be --- the tombstones of the dead were protecting the living from one another . -- got to wonder what their thinking as they fought there --well if I get killed at least its not far to the graveyard for burial. -- now the rifle holes all over the walls are odd unless planes were strafing --I mean the folks were firing from the windows of the buildings so fire at the windows ---why shoot the plain brick walls? unless that bomb fragments of some sort that were meant for ground troops along the buildings . the finnish civil war around the end of WW1 was quite brutal -----the reds at one time were actually thinking of killing all capital class persons over 8 years of age -- thankfully it failed to pass by a mere 2 votes --it was called "St Bartholomew's Eve"

I'm not the thread starter but finnish civil war whites vs red --1918 --about the same time as the russian revolt took place --the countrues border each other --and the red (communist) vs (white (non communist ) violance occured here as well.--the "white" fins beat back the communist take over attempt.

Cool pics, what era / year was this fought in.

Finnish civil war 1918-Battle of Tampere 23.3-5.4. 1918. Biggest battle ever fought in Scandinavia before WW2. Yes this was very cruel civil war with concentration camps, POW executions and white and red terror.
