We were at out club meeting last week when a guy came up to me and told me about hunting an old yard that some friends of his owned. 3 days later there were many dead spots in the yard and they were not mad but certainly brought it to his attention. We all want to dig, but if we leave dead spots all over a public place we may start losing more places to dig at. As for private yards you may not be welcome back the next time. Hit the areas with moist dirt, near water or maybe get in the water, or where they have watered grass.
It is up to all of us to help preserve our hobby. OK I'm done preaching.
By the way you are all invited to come to our club meetings. swiss.org

Very good advice Mike. That's one reason I don't hunt much dirt in the summer, especially now in these drought conditions.

I'm surprised anyone can even dig the ground is so dry. So I decided to try my first water hunt. I'll post my one good find on a separate post.
Thanks Mike for your advice, we all need to "play by the rules" to protect the future of our hobby :metaldetector:

I am not much of a yard hunter, I like the water and the Old abandoned home sites.
Mike has some advice for us all.
Thank you for the tip.

Plugs having hard time, after last heavy rain(about two inches) i dug plugs by launch and they were dry at three inches. Visited someone with a yard to detect ,(not to detect )yesterday and it may wait till next spring at this rate. Always someplace to detect though!

You weren't preaching Mike, it was well said. Hopefully it will rain this weekend and restore the ground, think Green. :happysmiley:

That's the reason I have been doing much detecting have some good spots but I would like to hit them more then once:laughing7:, Pray for rain we sure need it.

When I can't avoid the itch to detect, I don't plug at all. I cut a small slit and pinpoint shallow targets out with my finger. I don't dig deep targets now.

When I have to dig (by law) a pipe for work, I soak the plug with water if it's in someone's lawn. Common courtesy.

I've got a 10 acre sand lot to play in this summer if anyone wants to help!!

I hope I get a chance to take you up on that offer in the near future.
It sounds fun to me.
