A lifelong friend and TN member ,Lyle aka LionsPride and I joined forces Friday and hunted some great spots Up North. The weather was freezing in the am ,but by noon had warmed up to a beautiful fall day. The area we hunted was really remote ,but with the help of his dad,Alan,we were able to pinpoint some very old homesteads. These are totally overgrown now and what were once plowed farm fields are now pine, maple and oak forests. The first homestead was pretty easy to find and we were able to locate the rootcellar with out a problem. Loggers had pushed huge piles of brush and dirt all over tho,and the undergrowth was blackberry briars and porcupine egg bushes.
The digging was hard, but fortunately Lyle was the designated digger! LOL. We were dreaming of hitting the gold buried in the cellar, but guess we will have to dream a little longer. After a couple of finds ,we moved down the road to another homestead site. This one was a bit more difficult to find ,so the three of us ,along with the two dogs spread out and finally Alan hollered that he had found it. This one was really built deep into the hill and had a stone wall surrounding it. The bad thing about root cellars in the middle of the woods is that bears like to use them for dens. This in mind,I sent Lyle in first! This one was really dark and deep....and you guessed it...full of animal droppings, bones and remnants of a porcupine.I told Lyle (nervously)that it really looked like a bear had been sleeping here...His answer was.."well he's not home now so dig!" Hahahaha. After locating the foundations of the cabin,we dug for a while, pulling out several old relics and then decided to scout out a few more sites that we were trying to locate. We had researched quite a few spots and just wanted to try and locate the sites before snow fall for future hunting. After stomping through what seemed like hundreds af acres ,we were able to pinpoint several more potential sites.
We covered alot of miles ,but also found some cool stuff ,with the hopes of finding more.
