Bear paw claws fringed belt pouch bag

I picked this up at a local antique shop the woman didn’t know much about it as it was her husbands that recently passed. Hope the pictures are good

I agree, or maybe a boy scout. I made this vest around 1959-60 when I was 12-13. Beading took most of the summer working an hour or so a night. Split cowhide is a lot tougher to bead than softer deerskin, poked my fingers often with the needle.

Either way, around $2000. Plain old cheap suede no beading no fringe around it 8" x 4" will run in the $29 herd. Do the hot pin test on the back of one of the claws. Not plastic - still $$$. If still in doubt a Tandy leather store usually have people that are very knowledgeable. Do a web search for native American beaders / crafters. My expert died a couple years ago so that's no help. But if you find a tribal member, they always know someone who knows volumes. Only it's all in their heads.

On that pouch, none of the elders in the Kiowa tribe would be able to tell me anything about it cause the bear is sacred to them and they would not have anything to do with one. I'm used to a little more precise stitching on accoutrements. However, those beads can be dated, if you do some research. They appear to be glass, and a quality type, and that might put the date back aways. These days they're mostly plastic. And it is worth something cause it's good work, so you got your money's worth for it.

Get ahold of indianstore.org they've pointed me in the right direction several times. Nice people, and of course if you make a purchase or two the info flows a little freer. I have it on my other puter, but there's an old boy that shows how to make everything a mountain man would need. He makes stuff for museums & historical societies so that would be a good source of info leads. Have you taken it to your local museum or historical society? Your answers might be in your own backyard . Heck you might even be able to fenagle a free appraisal!
