That's certainly shiny, so, what is a loafstone exactly?

yes nice
what is a loafstone????
thanks, larson1951

Really nice artifact. I would love to see more, clear pics. It almost looks as if it could have been salvaged. Does it have groovess on both ends? Thanks for the peak.
Chuck

 Very nice go one size smaller or your pic downsizing. Nice polish. Nice find.

Choo,

Where in Pike County? My family has property near the Williams Gun Shop.

I would love to see some more pictures of your artifact. I am not sure it is a loafstone. Maybe a salvaged bannerstone or pipe fragment. I say pipe, b/c the material is Ohio Pipestone, and it was primarily used for pipes.
Can you take pics of the entire piece from several angles? You will also need to resize them down a bit. If you need any help with this process, drop me an email at jondickinson75@cinci.rr.com .
I happen to know a thing or two about loafstones. They are my favorite artifact, and I have been collecting them for a long time. I attached an old pic or two that shows a few of them in my collection.

Jon Dickinson

Jon, I was hoping you would see and weigh in on this post. I had the same thoughts. As I said before more pics would sure help.

I took some more pics of the piece, I believe it is a loafstone, it has a groove on both ends
on one end it looks like they started another groove but it was not quite center of the piece,it is not a piece of a pipe, I have seen loafstones in books, I have seen one that looks just like the piece I have, it was called a classic loafstone. I found the piece on Morgans Fork, Road. on my grandfathers farm. sorry about the pics I am not very good at taking pictures.

Choo,

Thanks for the pics. Unfortunately, I am still not sure. I see one end that clearly had a hole drilled through it. My guess is that it was a larger piece that was broken, and then salvaged into its present form. I can't see the hole on the other side.
I highly doubt pipe either, just threw it in b/c of the material. There were a small number of bannerstones, expanded center gorgets, and boatstones made from Pipestone that it could be.
Whatever the artifact was/is, it sure is special, and I would be overjoyed to find it. I'll try to make a loafstone post for the board to illustrate a few, and explain their usage.
Regards,
Jon Dickinson.

Heres the info( SoIll) posted for me.
Googled it,and came up with some pics.and history.

Loafstones may have been Atl-Atl weights, but like Cones, they are a problematical artifact that we can only speculate on their uses. I have seen some that have grooves from one end to the other across the top, some that just have the grooves on the ends like choo's, and some that have no grooves whatsoever. Their actual use is anybodies guess.
