Beautiful obsidian drill!!

My son and I had such a good day out hunting! Someone I met on here on tnet gave me a great tip about 3 years ago and we finally made it out exploring! We were walking together and saw it at the same time.. he actually saw it a split second before me! It is a really nice piece to hold. Such a good good day!!!! My son's find not mine!

That's a beauty! I tend to lean towards it being used as a perforater and a small thumbnail scraper. The woman or man would use the scraper to scrape away unwanted flesh before using the perforater to set the holes for sewing. Just my interpretation and thoughts.

Thank you all for the kind posts. Hi Old digger, when we were talking about the piece on the way home we thought it was a multi use tool. He asked what they would drill. I'm guessing awls were used to make clothing. With it being such nice material., I think someone made it for their companion. I also think it was probably used for a few generations. Thanks for the great link. This obsidian is banded, maybe we can track it to it's source. We don't get out to much to hunt so it was so nice to find this!!! Good luck out there!!!

I have to wonder if they selected the material and fashioned the tool on purpose so the banding would be on the face like that.

Thanks dts52! Imaudigger, I wonder about that too. I think this type of obsidian may have all been banded. I ran across a detailed obsidian/native American project. It's very interesting about Colorado obsidian and trade movement. If you Google Ferguson and Skinner Colorado obsidian it should come up. I couldn't figure out how to share the PDF.

I can't believe the size of those chunks. Thanks for posting that video CaptEseban! We usually find the grey and spotted obsidian being brought up from New Mexico. Thanks sandchip, I was looking into what would be perforated. I am guessing mainly clothing. I found that you would usually only have one outfit. Southwestern cultures pounded sagebrush and used the fiber for clothes. I always find it interesting the clothing they have found in the caves. I once found some corn seeds in a cave here in Colorado. I don't know if a pack rat brought it there or what. Happy Hunting!!
