Bee in flight at last

I have been trying for ages, so it seems, to get a picture of a Bumble bee in flight. Don't ask why, I just thought it would be challenging, and it was :tongue3:

. To be truthfull I waited a full 10 minutes to get these shots, and it's not really flying so much as just taking off, with a couple of shots of it foraging. Plus a couple of insects I cannot identify as yet. I thought the one in the last pic was some kind of horse fly, but I have had no luck in identifying it or the black ant/wasp one yet, can you guys help :dontknow:

WOW!!!!WOW!!!!WOW!!!!! Your pictures turned out beautifully!!!! :notworthy:

The bee ones are too cool, the wings are going so fast you can't even see them in some shots, and other shots show how delicate their wings are, they are pretty little insects, but scary too!!!! :hello2:

Not sure on other bugs, the one looks like a flying ant we have in our area. Can't wait to see more pics from you, you always put a huge smile on my face!!!!! :headbang:

The best way I have found to stop wings in motion or catch lightning bolts is to do videos on your camera, then when you upload them to your computer, see if you can get individual stills from the video. Find the ones that have the wings stopped then save, then post here. It is best to use a tripod.....NGE

That's amazing! I can't get a clear picture of my dog because he always moves. I don't know how anyone could get a picture of a bee in flight! Way to go!

Ian, I was out in the yard taking photos and came across a insect that looks much like yours (just lighter in color) did some searching on the internet, I am fairly certain I have an ID for the insect in your last photo. I believe it is a "Bee Fly" here is a link:

Hi MT, I'm using a Canon Eos 7D, and the lens at the time was an EF 70-300 IS USM. If memory serves, the settings were 1/1000 f4.5 ISO 400. Next time I will up the shutter speed and use flash at about 8 frames per second, I should get the wings then :laughing7:
