Went out to an old Saw Mill that was part of a mining operation, and ended up digging up a double headed axe and this unusual lead weight. It weighs 1.3 Lbs, it says SIMMONS H'DW'RE CO. ST. LOUIS The site dates between 1896-1910. **** Special Thanks to johnnyi and kenley for helping me I.D. this as a #10 Lead Based Babbit Ingot for use in bearings.**** Happy Hunting....

Thanks for lookin!

Probably for weighing nails!

sodapoptop, could this be an ingot of babbit for use on the the mill's bearings?

Babbit for bearings and also used in wire rope sockets.

best paper weight iv ever seen ;D nice find MR TUFF

Hey thanks for Weighing in guys..... I believe you are correct that this is an ingot of Grade #10 Lead based Babbit. (78-83% Lead Base) I have been scratching my head trying to figure out why there is that big X stamped on the top. Now it makes sense. I am thinking about painting it GOLD and using it as a paperweight.

Excellent find!
