When i was a kid some of the stores would have a bell hanging on the door, to tell them a customer came in .
Could the clapper have hung from the end of the threads of the hook ?
anyways that my guess .

I was thinking snuffer at first, but after looking at them, I think an antique shop keeper bell, is much closer. The hook would attach to a spring wire or bracket that the bell would hang off of.
