So, I must inform the world that I have the BEST MOTHER EVER!!!

I went MDing in her living room and found these under the tree :laughing7:

at pro.webpgear.webp

I had only asked for the MD, it was all I wanted - and she (without any prior MD knowledge) found me the shovel and scoop! :headbang:

Anyways, 2 days before on the 23rd I did some "yardwork" at a neighbor's place (c. 1900) with my Tracker IV. Found a 1941 nickel, 3 wheats (1917, 1949, 1956), 2 padlock keys, a marble, a faucet tap, a bullet casing that appears to be a .50 cal rifle round (no markings! Possible WWII souvenir?) and $0.80 in clad. Can't wait to test my new AT Pro!

EDIT: Forgot to mention... I will be testing my new AT Pro in two places over the next month - Coin Beach, DE and my uncle's property in Whitpain Twp., PA - a property (though not the home) that has major Revolutionary War ties! Can't get any better test beds than that!

I noticed that about the rebar - I brought it into work today (slow day) and we were toying with it, it really didn't like the concrete flooring of the plant no matter what the iron disc was set to. Even if I lay it on the table and run stuff under it I'll still get a feel for what it sees the different metals at.

Congratulations, I hear that is a great detector. I have been looking at it with the option pack #2 on Kellyco.

Good luck and HH.

I think laying the unit on a non-metalic desk and air testing coins and other items will give you the best indoor indication of where different things hit. I saw someone once attach various coins to paint stirrers (use glue, tape, or rubber bands) so that any jewelery etc you are wearing doen't impact the readings and you can still read the control unit on your machine while scanning the item. Hope this helps.....Erik

I vote BANNER....haha...nice find or should i say nice score....either way...enjoy that pro...my buddy hunts with his and loves....it does well sniffin out the silver coins.

I was planning on - in my living room of course - using a variety of coins from my collection to get a sort of default reading list before I hit the dirt, so I will have my own set of numbers; I just wanted to have something to compare them to. I hunt in a variety of areas so the mineralization probably varies a bit from area to area.

I tried that when I first took my ACE out of the box.... hmmm found every nail in the floor... but i did get to hear the difference between iron and coins. But it may throw off your numbers.

I can't seem to find the ground here today... its all covered with that white cold stuff... argh!

Very nice! The AT PRO is a nice machine.

I don't think my concrete floor has too much rebar - the MD balanced out at 75 and I was able to get ideas for every coin in my Type book.

So, here's the number chart from last night... The floor balanced out to 75.

00-40 Iron (duh)
44-46 Aluminum foil
45-46 3-cent nickel
45-49 Steel (used my wedding band for this)
50-52 War nickels
51-53 Nickels
60-63 Flying Eagle/Copper-Nickel IHC
66-67 3-cent silver (the one I used was pretty beat)
71-73 Bronze IHC
74-76 Zinc cents (1981 - present)
79-80 2-cent piece
79-82 Silver dimes
80-81 Clad dimes
81-82 Wheat cents
85-87 1805 LC, silver quarters
86-88 Clad quarters
88-92 Silver halves (used an 1854-O with arrows)
90-92 Large cents
95-96 Silver dollars (used a 1921 Morgan)

Pull tabs were inconsistent, and jumped around too much. Didn't have any cans or slaw to test, nor any screw caps. I don't want to test it for gold using white gold so most of our jewelry is out of the question. I think I'll pretty much be digging anything above 60 in Pro Coin mode, and only the nickel signals that don't jump.

Ok, so set yourself in stone. ONLY dig from 60 and up. Just, please, let me know where you're hunting, ok? ;) LOL

Now, that you're all expert and stuff. Try this test. Use a gold ring if you can. If you don't have one, try any ring but make it a little bit thin. Not too thin, small wedding band will do nicely.

First find the depth it goes away. Then, move closer so you get a fair, repeatable signal.

Ok, now, try it with the ring flat and going side to side.

Then, stand the ring on end and go back and forth again.

Then, rotate the ring 90 degrees, still on end, and try it again going the same way, side to side.

Let me know how each worked for you.

Thanks for the chart!

HH!

My parents got me my first nice detector for my birthday years ago. I was very grateful. Good luck at coin beach. Was there two years ago and had a lot of luck. Don't know how it's been since they did some beach replenishment. Keep us posted on your finds.

:laughing9: Yeah, yeah, yeah... remember, I haven't made it out to the dirt yet, and I was trying to get a FEEL for it! LOL :laughing7:

I've read enough TNet stories to know how stuff sounds to y'all while it's in the ground, and I have enough experience digging ghost signals myself to know that good stuff isn't always a solid number. A chart is a nice REFERENCE PIECE to carry when I go to the field for the first time, to sort of know which metals ideally read in which range.

Whadifind, I will probably post my first video that opens with me ripping the chart up and stomping on it :BangHead: Just for you, buddy :) before I get on with showing my first major find.

Rat, I will definitely be showing off my Coin Beach finds! Count on it! My wife and her niece will be using my old Tracker IV so I will post a collective shot of what we get.

You didnt mention the good ol' Zinc penny :laughing7:

They read any number between 60-77, depending on how long they have been in the ground. Thats wild the numbers you got, they are close to what I get, but for instance Copper pennies on my machine is 80-82, and dime will read 82-84...I have noticed if somethign is right on top of the ground, it throws the numbers off some.

Good Luck with it man..I think you will enojy it!

You didnt mention the good ol' Zinc penny :laughing7:

You are absolutely right! Idk how I could have missed it; I definitely tested them. Well, I updated the list. The zinc cents I tested rang in at 74-76, but I can see how deterioration would widen that range a bit.

EDIT: I do have a question about iron. I noticed when I was testing my coin collection that the better condition coins tended to have specific range values, +/-1. Will scrap iron jump around, and will forged tool iron be that specific? Just in case I come across an iron relic...

Those are good presents. All I got were shoes that don't detect metal.

Here is a chart for the AT-Pro from another forum put together from the members that is pretty accurate.
Just remember that you should only use the VDI as a tool to identify along with the tone sound the AT-pro is making.
The tone sound is more precise to verify what is under the coil.
Also deep items may sound off on the detector but the VDI will be blank.
Listen to the tones and dig everything at first and try to guess what it is before you dig it.
That is the easiest way to learn the tones.

You may also want to watch these videos to get you started.

She had to have talked with someone in the hobby or went to a store with some knowledgeable helpers. My wife got me a toaster oven with an automatic timer.... I am sad. I don't understand at what point she thought to herself... "I know what I'll get him !!!! a toaster oven with an automatic timer!!! that's what he wants!!!"

She might have been thinking "I'm tired of making toast for him. He can make it himself, and the automatic timer should keep him from burning it". :laughing7:

Oh, heckfire! I have absolutely no doubt that you'll do fine! :) Just trying to edumacate some about the fallacy of VDI being gospel. ;)

But, while you're getting a feel indoors, try what I suggested with the ring.

Also, try taking a known signal and see if it changes number, simply by moving the signal further and further away. That would be a truer range.

Ya know what? Somehow, I just wish I could be there the first time you use the machine for real. LOL :)

One more thing, since you're going to a beach, read up a bit on how to use it in the wet and dry. Might help.

HH!

My wife got me the same thing for Christmas!!!!!!! Thats awesome! Good luck hunting I would be if mother nature just didnt drop a foot of snow on me!

Happy Holidays and Happy hunting
