Hi all. I have an Explorer XS with the stock 10.5 coil and I was wondering if it would be worth getting a new coil. Will the newer coils be an improvment over the coil that I have now ? Thanks !

Not to me. I sold my new pro coil at a loss to buy two of what you have.

I switched to Pro coil over two years ago and never looked back. My original stock coil needed replacement and the newer, lighter Pro Coil was an excellent replacement. No regrets whatsoever.

Yeah ....thats what I was afraid of. :D

I've got the stock coil and the Sunray X-12 coil... and the X-12 really is lighter than the stock one.
I can't make suggestions as I've only been out a handful of times with my XS since I got it at the beginning of the year.
IP has way more experience than I do with the machine though. But I DID pick up a 1942 Merc today with my XS & X-12 coil!
It was my first silver, so I'm really happy. ;D

Hey now! My White's IDX Pro is a real detector... lol I did pretty well with it, and I know that thing like the back of my hand.
But the Explorer XS is definitely a different machine on a completely different level of detecting, so I know what you mean!

Where I seen the difference is my usual type hunting which is in iron. The pro coil seemed to want to grab a false better, which took me a couple extra swings over to decide whether to dig. That's basically what my hunting is all about so that extra time over a year would add up. I have no idea how many targets I've dug in iron but it must be many thousands because the Explorer and 10.5" coil is the only thing I've used the last 10 years or so. When there's any change I can pick it up pretty quick. I also haven't changed my settings in about 6 years which helps to notice a difference too. I did like the pro coil weight! But I didn't like how the lower shaft attaches to the middle of the coil.

PS... Unless someone has mega hours on the Explorer I think both coils will probably seem the exact same. One is just lighter and made a bit different. Oh yeah... one doesn't find 2 high grade bust halfs. ;D (That would be mine)

That would be ME!!! :laughing7: But as I get better, I'll probably start understanding more... I'm still learning.

I learned little things for several years, but once I found a place that felt right I stopped making changes and now it's all pretty much just the same from year to year. But I think that's a good thing because I believe I am too the point where I can't learn anymore and it lets me put 100% focus on the sites. I think I'm like that in life in general, drive myself crazy trying to find the best way to do something, but once I feel I'm there I keep doing it unless someone shows me a better way. Being shown a better way for the explorer a few years in was actually part of what got me to the point I am now. Never good to be too confident too early... but as long as you are willing to change it doesn't hurt too bad. It did however sting pretty bad on finds, but that's a whole other story. ;D

Thanks IP.I havent had alot of experience with the XS yet but I'm lovin it ! I've used many detectors over the years and the minelabs are pretty impressive.I'm happy with the coil I have now but it cant hurt to have a backup I'm thinkin. As for the bust halves.......I got a seated and barber half and a seated dime in one hole last year......so it will at least come close.

for me works best stock 1000 or later they started to call it - 1050, to make it look bigger ;D

I thought you told me your tests indicated the pro coil hit copper and brass better than the 1050?

yes ironpath, but I told you just about one advantage, but its secret... :hello:. seriously I did not have to test pro, but what I have tested other producers not worth it, even more I develop one thing with old stile coils that they are best for me
