Personally, I don't think there is one best machine, they are all tools in the toolbox. If you were looking for one all around machine for water and land, I'd recommend the Minelab CTX3030. Another good choice is the Garrett AT Pro. It really depends on where you are detecting, what types of targets your are after, etc. If all you do is water hunt, the Minelab Excalibur may be a good choice. It's kind of like Fords and Chevys, some like one better than the other, but they all perform to some extent in the right environment.

That machine has not hit the market yet. There is the Minelab GPX 5000 for gold nugget and relic hunting, the Tesoro Sand Shark for saltwater diving, the Minelab Exporer SE for farm fields.. Metal detectors are like golf clubs, the more you have in your bag, and the better you know how - and when to use them, the better your scores.
