I never found a coin from before 1904, but then one day I pull a 1723 Hibernia Halfpenny out of the woods that has homesteads and farm fields hundreds of years ago:. One week later I got permission to detect a trail that went through farm field that have been in use since the 1700's (Without disturbing the freshly plowed farm fields). I found an unreadable King George II copper within 10 minutes. I have not been back there yet, but I am allowed to detect the trail when ever I want as long I fill in the holes (I fill in my holes no matter where I am). Yesterday I found a stone lined well in the woods, around 100 feet away from it I found a small coin with a crown on one side, it is almost unreadable except for a crude --50, and a bust on the other side.
