Hi Everyone,

I went out with Lucky's Girl today and we made HUGE discovery!!!

(I told her she REALLY needed to work on pinpointing. Her holes are much too big.)

With all the rains we've been having, please be very careful and WATCH where you're going...
We discovered this cistern/well on a property we walked late last fall.
It was 6 feet deep (that we could see) and full of water.

Very good advice ID, thanks for posting it! :icon_thumright:

Wow,thats a big hole for that diggen tool of hers. :laughing9:

Oh Boy are they right with this warning , I had one collapse on me . You could not see it as it was covered with earth and grass , and when I stepped on it , the whole thing gave way . I had four broken ribs and a huge cut with many many stitches .
But one thing I did find out was they are around old home sites and cattle watering areas .

This thing was about 18 ft deep so if a kid had fallen in they would have gone to the bottom .

Metal detectorists dig the HOLE experience. :tongue3:

WOW!!!! :o

Wow!!!! Glade you all were so observant while on your hunt.
:sign13: Don't forget to "MARK" :director: these "HAZARDS" in any fashion :stop: possible for the next person to see.
Another thing you may want to consider doing and that is to let the local police agency know about this dangerous discovery.
Have fun, good luck and be safe on all of your adventures and God be with you.

pump that thing dry and dig the silt, we dug the one at my grandparents house years ago, and found lead soldiers, clay marbles coins and bottles in the bottom!

Good point - we did call City Hall (it's on city-owned property) and they sent a truck right over.
That had it barricaded off before we left.

We were concerned that with the warm up, kids would be out playing. A hole like that is just too tempting for kids to mess with.

Daedalus - I walked directly on this last Fall. I am VERY lucky that it didn't cave in then!
(I remember this because the area around it was giving me some funky readings)

I am glad you did not fall in like I did , you can not see them and when the county went out to check they said that a square of plywood had been put over the hole years ago and covered with dirt. Well the wood rotted away and I found it. But looking back after the fall I do remember the spot where it was the grass was real green and taller , it was the same shape as the hole , so now I look for things like that when I am out were It could happen again.

The county filled in the hole with rocks and concrete so no one else would have this happen to them, they also made a county law that when these are not used anymore they are to be filled in. So one good thing came out of this anyway.

But you are right you are very luck that it did not cave in with you last year , and it happens so fast that there is not much you can do when it goes in.

About two weeks ago me and a buddy struck out into the woods looking for a cistern well that my dad and I had found near an old railroad area.. it was about ten years ago when we came across it walking through the woods.. My buddy and I couldn't find it but there was three new homes in the area that wasn't there when we came across the well. I'm figuring it would be a good area to metal detect around but am figuring they have filled it.. I'm just going to have to knock on some doors and ask about the well..I"m sure one of the home owners know where its at.. well cool pics and glad to see some else swinging an Eagle II,, thats my dad's favorite machine and let me tell you it has dug some history... did yall dig anything around the well ?? take care and happy hunting..

I would hate to fall in that! :o

Very cool! nice pics!
