My new digging pal and I hit a couple spots today. He's new to the hobby, been digging for maybe a couple months with my ATPro. I'd say he's a quick learner, his first ever coin was a 1911 Canadian quarter a few weeks ago.
Today we hit a spot that was frustrating due to the insane grass (he did find his first Indian head at this spot a few nights ago). So we headed off to my go-to spot instead, it's freshly mowed super short. I didn't have much hope as I've pounded this place and it's difficult to even find a penny. Within the first two minutes I got a faint signal and dug this 1908 fishscale.
I called him over and showed him. Cool, there is hope I thought! Then five minutes later he yells at me "I broke into the 1800's!!". Right on, I figured he had pulled an IH cent. But no, a freaking 1896 BARBER HALF! It was vertical, straight up and down in the hole, with lots of iron around. I've been over this spot with the Deus several times so I'm baffled I didn't dig it before. He must have hit it just right. I'm happy for him but can't believe I missed it!

I went on to find a spill with two Wheaties and a 1907 Indian, then an old Canadian small cent.

It turns out the fishscale is a 1908 "large 8", which makes it the key date for the Edward 5cent series. If you look past the gunk on it, it's in great shape. What do you guys think it would grade?
