Can you help identify this rock? It weighs 8 pounds, will not melt when heated with a torch but cuts very easily with a saw. Has a shiny porous surface. It came from somewhere in Alabama, not sure where as someone gave it too me. I have researched nickel meteorites and it looks like one to me but not sure and dont know where to go have it tested.

If not a meteorite , It could be hematite (iron ore ) is a magnet attracted to it ? to get more info, you might take it to a nearby
university - geology/mineralogy department - should be able to help .

No it is not magnetic. We also put a torch to it and it wouldn't melt, just glowed red.

I agree with Argentium, most likely NOT a metorite, But still very interesting rock,
Got to ask what kind of saw did you use, as I imagine most rochs are quite hard as compared to 5 for steel saws. So to be able to saw it without something harder, well is a little strange.

Just observations, seems very porus like something volcanic. As far as Silver goes, is there any known from your area, as that would be a big help.

It looks like basalt to me. It is a volcanic rock.

Thank you. It does favor that picture. It was cut with a wood saw blade. I will do more research on basalt.
